BEHIND THE SOUND — HOWARD BENSON
The Producer Who Refused to Be Defined by an Era.

Some producers become synonymous with a particular sound or decade. Howard Benson never allowed himself to be defined by either.

From the late-’80s hard rock scene to alternative rock, nu metal, post-grunge and modern metal, Benson has navigated successive generations of rock music with remarkable versatility.

His greatest strength? Understanding what different artists and audiences needed, while consistently delivering powerful, accessible and commercially compelling productions.

He didn’t impose the sound of one era on the next. He understood each era on its own terms.

Nearly four decades later, he remains a respected name in rock production.

The eras changed. The sound changed. Howard Benson kept moving forward.

16 albums from my collection. All produced by Howard Benson. 1989–2018.

The Alpha. “Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz” was released 37 years ago TODAY (the label’s promo materials prove the actual date)

There’s been a three-way album tie my whole life so I don’t suppose I will ever be able to choose my definitive ‘favorite album of all time’ but this one is ABSOLUTELY the most important album of my entire life.

This changed me in ways I couldn’t have ever known it would when I got it…completely by accident in 1994.

There would not be a ‘me’ the way I am if it wasn’t for this album. Changed my entire life.

It was EXACTLY what I needed when I was sixteen years old…a whole album ALL ABOUT looking sweet and wearing whatever the fuck you want, making a stand, rocking Hollywood and trying to convince the girl you like to, you know…touch it.

This album is a goddamn masterpiece. Here’s some of my Leather Boyz memorabilia…and my first ever CD copy of the album that I had to specifically import from Japan to get. Like in the days before the internet.

I wanted it bad. Out of my cold dead hands.

Thanks for the scene, Pretty Boy Floyd…and the inspiration and the spirit. It created the me I would grow up to be.
