The best part of golf is where it takes you.

This summer, like most years this would be Cornwall but my first trip to Newquay.

A few days in Newquay. A change of scenery. And naturally, the golf clubs came along.

I’d had Perranporth on my list for some time.

But there’s only so much a photograph can tell you about a place.

Especially somewhere like this.

The first thing that strikes you isn’t the golf. It’s the landscape.

Miles of coastline, rolling dunes and the Atlantic stretching out beyond the fairways.

Then you start playing. And realise this place has a mind of its own.

Golf usually asks you to pick a target. Here, sometimes you just have to trust one exists.

Blind shots. More blind shots. And then a few more for good measure.

There’s something strangely enjoyable about hitting a ball into the unknown.

Walking over the next dune, hoping you’ve made the right decision.

Every hole feels like discovering another little corner of the coastline.

Who cares about the scorecard. I found myself looking around more. Taking photographs. Appreciating where I was.

Sometimes the game is only part of the experience.

By the time I reached the final few holes, I felt like I’d only just started to understand the place.

It’s the sort of course you could play ten times and still find something new.

For me, Perranporth is one of those courses you have to experience rather than just look at photographs of.

It’s quirky, sometimes frustrating, and there are plenty of shots where you’re not entirely sure what you’re doing.

But that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

I loved the variety, the unpredictability and the way the course uses the natural landscape.

It’s not going to be everyone’s idea of perfect golf, but I’d go back in a heartbeat.

It had been many years since I last played Stonewall’s North Course, so getting back out there Monday for a club industry outing was a great reminder of just how good this place is.

Tom Doak’s routing moves naturally across the rolling Chester County landscape, with great angles, bold green complexes and the kind of strategy that keeps revealing itself throughout the round.

The club's logo is one of the coolest touches in golf, a nod to the property’s history as dairy farmland. Between the old stone walls, barns and surrounding countryside, Stonewall still feels deeply connected to what was here long before the golf courses arrived. A special place, and one I was glad to get back to.
