Throwback Christmas 2020 when Kyra was 7 months old. I would say nothing much has changed since 2020 except my mental health is getting better .
Becoming a mother changed me as a person. Inspite of having a roller coaster year I realized I have an inner strength and confidence I never knew I had. Small things, mostly self care are insignificant . All I care about is making sure Kyra is happy and healthy. The goals I set for myself aren’t still met but my life has never been this fuller —not just with things I do, but with love. I love seeing the world through Kyra’s eyes, which brings joy. Her curiosity and awe has helped me see the world in an entirely new way. I am still struggling to prioritize my basic goals …. hoping 2022 will make things better for all those we are fighting their battles .

It is amazing how the internet can make you meet some wonderful people. @priberry wrote a wonderful blog post for @lovetheworldtoday.in talking about something I relate to a lot.

When I read the post and saw her little girls making the Thipkyanchi Rangoli, it immediately sparked so many senses and memories for me -
✨the cold sensation of the red mitti stone that you dip in water and create the perfect base with,
✨the chalk and scale grid measured to the T,
✨mixing of the colours with the white powder so it flows swiftly between the fingers,
✨the Rangoli drawing books that are removed from the loft once a year, ✨the glitter sprinkle on the final artwork,
✨placing diyas in the middle of the rangoli hoping the oil doesn’t spill out and ruin it,
✨running around to every house in your society to see which aunty made the best rangoli that year AND
✨the sheer joy and pride of assisting your elder sister and mother in achieving this gorgeous artwork!

This post transported me to a time where I remember helping my mother with Diwali chores, such a pure unsaid ritual year after year. And the more I stay with this memory, I remember feeling my mother’s cotton nightgown which she would wear while doing home chores, wrapping my arms around her growing waist, smelling a mix of her talcum powder, sweat and kitchen fragrances.
And as she hugs me back, I can hear the sound of her bangles and feel her extra washed hands, the roughness on her thumb from kitchen work over the years.

And in this moment, I’m home 💞
