🎞️ Synopsis
Abu Shadi, a 65-year-old teacher in Nazareth, prepares for his daughter’s wedding. His son Shadi, an architect living in Rome, returns home to help deliver invitations personally, following Palestinian tradition. As they visit relatives and friends, old tensions surface and their opposing views on life challenge their relationship.

🗞️ Review
Annemarie Jacir turns a day of wedding preparations into an intimate portrait of family, duty and belonging. The visits reveal the social expectations shaping Palestinian life, while the father and son struggle to express the hurt and affection beneath their arguments.

🏆 Awards and Festivals
Locarno Film Festival 2017 - Don Quixote Award; Youth Jury Award
Dubai International Film Festival 2017 - Best Film; Best Actor
Mar del Plata 2017 - Best Film; Best Actor; Argentine Critics’ Award; SIGNIS Award
Amiens International Film Festival 2017 - Golden Unicorn; Audience Award

🎬 Production
Mohammad Bakri and Saleh Bakri are father and son in real life. Jacir chose them to bring an added depth to the relationship at the heart of the film. The story unfolds over a single day, with much of the dialogue taking place inside their old Volvo.

ℹ️ Additional Notes
The title means “duty” in Arabic and refers to the Palestinian tradition of personally delivering wedding invitations. For Jacir, this ritual reflects both the ties that hold a community together and the social obligations that can become suffocating.
