We are deeply grateful for all the delightful energy and reactions from the opening reception of Artifacts from an Unborn Empire. After more than two years of work, seeing this exhibition come to life and celebrating with friends, colleagues, and community members was deeply rewarding. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.

A special thank you to Stephanie Sherwood @stephanie_sherwood_art Without her invitation and guidance as Exhibition Coordinator, Artifacts would never have existed. Her talents as an artist, administrator, and installer are extraordinary, and this exhibition reflects her dedication throughout the process.

We were also honored to have many past exhibition directors at the opening. This project continues conversations developed through opportunities at Angels Gate Cultural Center with Cecelia Caro (Sanctuary of the Aftermath, 2021), the Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery with Dr. Mika Cho, Wonzimer Gallery with Alaïa Parhizi, Loft at Liz’s with Liz Gordon, Cerritos College Art Gallery with James MacDevitt, and many others. We are grateful for every opportunity that has helped us grow as curators.

Working with this remarkable group of artists has been a joy. Some are longtime collaborators, while others we hope to work with for years to come. While the exhibition explores civilization-sized questions, its true heart lies in the conversations, friendships, and creative exchanges that emerged. During difficult times, it felt meaningful to build something uplifting together.

Thank you to every participating artist and collaborator. We are proud of the depth, warmth, humor, quirkiness, darkness, and light everyone brought to the project. We are thrilled that audiences will have three more months to experience it, and fittingly, it concludes on the final day of the year.

The exhibition is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11am-8pm, and Saturdays, 12pm-5pm.

We will host a curatorial walkthrough on October 3, followed by Marcus Kuiland-Nazario’s workshop The Last Word is Yours: Epitaph as Self-Portrait. We are also planning future artist talks and pop-up tours.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and online for the Ruth Borun Lecture Series last Friday.

Thank you to John and Molly Chester @thebiggestlittlefarm for such an inspiring evening and for sharing their reflections on farming, the ongoing story of Apricot Lane Farms, and what they’re carrying forward into their next project.

We’re also so grateful to the Borun family for the generosity of their endowment, which makes the Ruth Borun Lecture Series possible and allows nights like this to happen.

And for those who want to continue the experience, we hope you’ll join us this Saturday for the Behind the Scenes Tour of Apricot Lane Farms Habitat Areas, a special opportunity to see firsthand the natural systems that help make this remarkable farm thrive.
