So much gratitude to incredible actor and artist Valarie Walker @primefactor123 for visiting our media theory graduate class today!

We were so honored for such a dynamic and meaningful visit after we spent the past two weeks studying landmark film The Watermelon Woman, and hearing Valarie’s perspective on her performance, queerness, and representation was so powerful and transformative. As I continue working on my Queer Film Classics book, I keep returning to some of my favorite scenes between Tamara/Valarie and Director Cheryl Dunye @cheryldunye. Their performances are truly special, moving, and such cherished scenes within the history of queer cinema. Tamara’s performance has always been one of my favorites in the film.

Thank you again Valarie Walker for teaching the grads, your extraordinary performance, producer Martha Page dear @mediapraxis and Director Cheryl Dunye, for creating such a formative film in the American cinematic canon.

The Watermelon Woman continues to shape and inspire how we think about cinema, filmmaking, history, queer identity, and representation. It is such a pleasure hearing from younger students who deeply love the film too and to learn with and from them.

I’m including a few cherished photos from last year's incredible screening and visit by Cheryl and Valarie to our program. Thank you again Valarie for your visit to the media theory class and everyone for your support, teaching, and transformative work again 🍉✨♥️

I first watched Cheryl Dunye’s “The Watermelon Woman” as part of a special “Women Make Film” series on Turner Classic Movies.

I was glued to my screen, watching this young lesbian cinephile in the 1990s exploring classic film. I watched this as a thirtysomething in 2020, wishing I knew it existed in my teens in the 2000s when I was really getting into film.

Dunye also stars as a fictional Cheryl, who works at a video store and is also working on a documentary about a black actress from the 1930s known as the Watermelon Woman.

The film blends the process on Cheryl’s documentary with glimpses of her life, including working at the video store, filming community events as a side gig and falling for a customer at the video store.

As a cinephile, I was captivated by the documentary part of the story and the video store scenes. As a queer person, I was fascinated to see a film from the mid-’90s with pretty much all of the main characters being LGBTQ.

I cannot recommend “The Watermelon Woman” enough, during Pride Month or anytime of the year. It is one of my all-time favorites!
