"This clip is the fourth in a series excerpted from ""Concealed and Denied,"" a short archival documentary without any archival footage. Instead, I restate what the subjects say in media appearances in my own voice, and describe what you're not seeing.

In this clip, I describe the Intercept's investigation of the conservative funding sources that fueled Christopher Rufo's nonprofit, the Documentary Foundation, which paid him a salary to finish his last feature for PBS, 2019's ""America Lost."" I contrast that partisan support with Rufo's self-mythologizing account of his supposed cancellation on the Joe Rogan Experience.

Resolving the dissonant timelines in Rufo's self-described political shifts requires following the money. To read more, @LUXmovingimage has published a new essay (link in bio) as part of my ""Narrative Warfare"" exhibition, which runs until May 31."

A round of applause for Film and Media Studies Professor Jordan Lord. They premiered their new film, “Concealed and Denied,” during a major solo exhibition entitled “Narrative Warfare” at Lux London. As part of the exhibition, they also delivered the Ian White Lecture at the Open City Documentary Festival.

An archival documentary without archival footage, “Concealed and Denied” narrates and audio-describes material from videos, podcasts, articles, and social media, while their images and soundtracks are denied. Through this deliberate absence, the film reveals how techniques – such as framing of the image, repetition, and editing – are used to manufacture authority and shape public understanding, particularly in right-wing broadcasting.

“Concealed and Denied” subsequently premiered in New York City at the legendary Anthology Film Archives as part of the sixth Prismatic Ground experimental documentary film festival.

🚨ONLINE SCREENING: EL PALACIO (2013) BY NICOLÁS PEREDA

So honored to show, friend and filmmaker, Nicolás’ moving film online for limited time.

El Palacio follows the daily lives of seventeen women living together in the same house for both economic and emotional support. Sharing domestic space, labor, and care, they train in various trades while preparing for work as nannies, domestic workers, and private nurses for the elderly.

Directed by Nicolás Pereda, one of the most singular voices in contemporary Mexican cinema. His films have screened at major international festivals, including Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, New York Film Festival.

Co-presented with Prismatic Ground, an annual festival in New York City centered on experimental documentary and avant-garde film. Pereda’s award-winning film Cobre, which received a Special Mention award at FIDMarseille, opened the 6th edition of the festival.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to co-curate the film retrospective of pioneering Japanese video artist and experimental filmmaker Kohei Ando as part of Prismatic Ground Film Festival! This was an important event as this heralded the first time his works have been screened in New York since 1991! Kohei-san and I have a history as we first connected in 2021 when I was a Research Fellow with Asia Art Archive in America writing educational materials on understudied Japanese artists. Kohei-san became one of my subjects and we connected via email. Since then, I’ve written extensively on his films and even edited his debut novel “Whispers of Vermeer”!

Many thanks to Inney Prakash, the founder of Prismatic Ground and Film Curator at Asia Society, for inviting me to contribute to the programming and to write an essay on Kohei’s significance. Additional thanks to Kohei-san for his support over the last half decade and to his friends & collaborators Karen Severns and Koichi Mori for their unwavering assistance.

Issho ni shigoto ga dekite kouei desu!
