No. 8

Coming in at No. 8 is a great example of learning to adapt when things don’t go according to plan!

Leading up to this tournament, Benson had been putting in a lot of work developing his deep half game.

The goal was to bring that work into competition and see how it held up against a resisting opponent.

But as we all know, your opponent doesn’t always cooperate with your game plan.

Benson wasn’t able to execute his deep half sequence exactly how he’d practiced it. The position didn’t unfold the way he expected, and he had to figure things out in real time.

Instead of getting stuck trying to force the technique, he adjusted, worked with what was available, and found his way to the sweep.

The original plan didn’t work, but the objective never changed.

And the adjustments didn’t stop there.

Another area Benson had been developing was his submission game from side control.

After completing the sweep, he transitioned into a dominant position and found an opportunity to finish with a lapel choke.

At least I think that’s what it’s called 🤷🏽‍♂️

What makes this submission special isn’t just the finish.

It’s watching Benson begin to understand that Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a series of perfectly rehearsed movements.

It’s a conversation between two athletes constantly trying to solve the problems the other creates.

Sometimes the greatest progress happens when Plan A falls apart and you’re forced to find Plan B.

That’s the growth I love seeing. Not just memorizing techniques, but developing the confidence to think, adjust, and keep moving forward when things don’t go his way.

Prepare with purpose. Adapt with confidence. Finish with intention.

“The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.”

Top 10 Submissions of 2026

This one might not be the flashiest submission on our countdown, but it represents a HUGE milestone in Wylie’s development.

Wylie started his BJJ journey as a top player. With his natural strength and athleticism, he was comfortable being on top, but playing guard was a different story.

He lacked confidence there, and it was something we intentionally focused on developing this year.

This match was special because it was the first time Wylie willingly pulled guard in competition.

Instead of relying on what he was already good at, he trusted the part of his game he’d been working so hard to develop.

He controlled the pace, worked through his positions, and eventually found the submission from his closed guard.

These are the moments I love most. Not necessarily the highlight reel finishes, but the moments when we get to see all those hours of intentional training turn into confidence.

The goal was never just to win matches. It was to become a more complete Jiu Jitsu player.

Sometimes the biggest victories aren’t the submissions themselves, but the growth it took to get there.

“The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.” — Proverbs 24:5 NLT

No. 9

Coming in at No. 9 is Benson’s bow and arrow choke!

The goal for this match was to get a little creative with his De La Riva and find a way to work his way to back control.

And that’s exactly what he did.

Benson used his De La Riva to create opportunities, worked his way to the back, and secured the submission with a beautiful bow and arrow choke.

One thing we’ve been encouraging the boys to do is be intentional with their training and have a purpose every time they step onto the mat.

It’s not always about winning as quickly as possible. Sometimes it’s about challenging yourself to apply something you’ve been working on.

There’s nothing better than watching Benson set a goal, trust his Jiu-Jitsu, and execute it in competition.

Have a plan. Trust your training. Execute.

No. 9 is in the books! Stay tuned as we continue counting down our favorite submissions of 2026.

Almost missed this one! 😂

By the time I made it to the coaches chair, the match had already started. Thankfully, I was only a few seconds late.

Wylie didn’t need much direction anyway. He went straight to work, established his 2-on-1 control, worked through his options, and found the opening for a Kimura to seal the gold! 🥇

One of the coolest things about watching Wylie develop is seeing how independent he’s becoming on the mats. He’s learning to trust his decision tree, stay composed, and let his technique do the work.

There was a time when I felt like I needed to coach him through every position. Now, sometimes I feel like I’m just sitting there with the best seat in the house. 😂

Proud of the work he’s putting in and the confidence he’s building.

🍓One Mission🍓

Coming into the finals, Benson had one more match standing between him and gold.

But Coach Nick had a slightly different mission for him.

Make it quick. He needs to get strawberries for his son. 🤣🍓🤣

That’s it. Those were the instructions.

And Benson understood the assignment!

He stepped onto the mat, went straight to work, found his opening, and finished the match by armbar.

Mission accomplished. Gold secured. Strawberries next! 🍓🥇

Coach @nickangeloni155 knows how to get the best out of the boys while keeping things fun.

There’s a time to be serious, a time to make adjustments, and a time to remind these kids that Jiu-Jitsu is supposed to be enjoyable.

With the season championship on the line, Benson could have easily allowed the pressure to get to him.

Instead, he stayed focused, trusted his training, and executed.

Two matches. Two submissions. Gold in our hometown.

And most importantly, Benson did what he needed to do to move into 1st place in the JJWL San Diego season standings.

Thank you, Coach Nick, for continuing to pour into our boys and helping them grow as athletes and young men.

Now let’s hope Coach got those strawberries! 😂

Wylie Dean’s @blessedmma Moment!

Less than 10 seconds on the clock. Winning on points. And Wylie decides it’s time to put on a show! 😮‍💨

Wylie stayed in control throughout the match, working his way out of his opponent’s tight guard and building a lead on points.

With the clock winding down, people in the stands were yelling for him to stay put and stall. He had the lead. He could’ve played it safe and walked away with the win.

But Not Wylie.

Inspired by Max Holloway’s legendary point-down moment, Wylie chose to put himself right back in the fire.

Cartwheel pass straight to a Kimura finish, right at the buzzer!

That’s one of the things I love about watching Wylie grow. He’s becoming confident enough in his game to take calculated risks, trust his technique, and have some fun out there.

Coach @nickangeloni155 constantly reminds the boys to never settle. Don’t just be satisfied with being ahead. Keep working, keep improving, and look for the finish.

That’s the @prismjiujitsu way.

Chasing No. 1 in San Diego

We’re back on home turf, and this time there’s a little more on the line.

The chase for @jjworldleague San Diego Season Champion. 🥇

Coming into this tournament, Benson was sitting in 2nd place in the season standings.

The mission was clear.

Win gold. Win by submission. Give himself a chance to take the top spot.

With JJWL’s points system, simply winning wasn’t enough. Every match and every finish mattered.

And Benson understood the assignment.

It was all business.

No unnecessary movements. No rushing the process. Just patiently working his game, getting his opponent caught in his web, and waiting for the opportunity to lock in his triangle.

Triangle secured. Submission finished.

One match down. One step closer.

I love watching Benson learn how to compete with a goal in mind without allowing the pressure of that goal to dictate how he performs.

The standings give him something to chase, but the work still has to be done one match at a time.

On to the finals.

“Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave.”

For His Glory.

@kobearcinuebjj

It’s such an honor and blessing to be able to help coach Kobe during his tournaments.

Kobe is Wylie and Benson’s Godbrother and best friend. Even though we live in different states, their bond has never been stronger.

One of the greatest blessings as parents is watching these boys go through adversity together. Knowing they have each other to lean on when we’re not around gives us peace. But even more importantly, knowing we’ve equipped them to lean on the Lord FIRST means everything.

Before every match, we pray. When we feel even an ounce of fear, we pray. And even if their name is seconds away from being called, we will never hesitate to stop and ask for prayer.

Kobe demonstrated that perfectly in this clip.

Just seconds before stepping onto the mats, with everything going on around him, he knew what mattered most. He asked for prayer.

As a father, these are the moments that mean more than any medal, podium, or championship ever could.

Because the goal has never been just to raise champions on the mats. It’s to raise young men who seek the Lord in every circumstance, who encourage one another through adversity, and who understand where their true victory comes from.

Win or lose, we already have victory through Jesus Christ.

IT IS FINISHED.

📖 John 19:30 (NLT)
“When Jesus had tasted it, he said, ‘It is finished!’ Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

📖 Philippians 4:6 (NLT)
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”

Closing In On Season Champ!

This one was special.

Not just because of the gold, but because of who we got to share the mats with.

One of the best parts of this tournament was having so many of our @prismjiujitsu teammates competing alongside us.

Throughout the day, parents, coaches, and teammates were moving from mat to mat, making sure everyone had someone in their corner.

There’s something special about looking around and seeing your entire team showing up for one another.

Of course, that also comes with a little added pressure. When your teammates and their families are watching, you naturally want to perform well.

But Benson stayed on task.

Match by match. Position by position. Submission by submission.

He trusted his game, stayed composed, and finished his matches by submission to bring home gold.

And with that performance, Benson moved into the top spot in the @jjworldleague San Diego season championship standings!

To be in this position in his hometown makes it even more special.

But the job isn’t finished 😤

One more tournament in December to close out the season and officially claim the San Diego season championship.

As proud as I am of Benson’s performance, what I’ll remember most is the community surrounding these boys.

The teammates cheering each other on. The parents running between mats. The coaches pouring into every athlete.

Individual matches. Team effort. One family.

Thank you, Lord, for surrounding our boys with people who genuinely care about their growth, both on and off the mats.
