POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Since October 7, over 70 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israeli forces in Palestine. The Israeli military has also killed three journalists in Lebanon, and targeted journalists in the West Bank and Jerusalem, arresting 44 journalists as of November 27, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate. The situation has gotten so dire that journalists and media workers are no longer wearing press vests to prevent further targeting by the Israeli military.

Israel’s punitive power and communications outages in Gaza have made even the simplest communications difficult and made reporting on-the-ground news from the genocide in Gaza nearly impossible.

In this special op-Ed co-published in @inthesetimesmag, @mainline_atl, @mondoweiss, @prismreports, @therealnewsnetwork, @reckon.news, @scalawagmagazine, and @truthout, nine U.S. journalists write about why journalists must speak out about what’s happening in Gaza, and call for an end to the occupation and a permanent ceasefire.

“As journalists and media workers, we know that silencing a free press is a key tactic of authoritarian governments … This is a defining political moment of our lives. We must mourn the dead, learn from their stories, and reject the assumption that journalism can ever be neutral. As we continue to build an internationalist movement for collective liberation, one that rejects all acts of repression and genocide, no one who cares about freedom can afford to see themselves as safe. As James Baldwin wrote to Angela Davis during her imprisonment in 1970, ‘If they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.’”

Kicking off #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth with a powerful piece about AND SO I STAYED by @tamarsarai in @prismreports! Her analysis is 🔥, especially in regards to how we intentionally subverted from the true crime genre, and instead “contextualize the lives and choices of the women in their film by exploring the bonds they share with their parents, children, siblings, and current partners; the complicated nature of the relationships where they suffered abuse; their limited options while they experience domestic violence and after they escape it; and how the court system misunderstands the psychological impact of intimate partner violence.”

“And So I Stayed asks viewers to confront the reality of what it means to survive domestic violence in a society where women face blame for both leaving and staying, and where defending themselves from violence can result in their incarceration.”

It's a searing article (link in bio) and we urge you to read, share, and spark conversations.

“It really comes down to the people power that won this election, and people power wins every election,” Shout out to Luciano, Seeds of Resistance Lead Organizer holding it down on Prism explaining the impact grassroots organizing had on stopping the CA Recall election and how we must put pressure on Newsom to hold true to his campaign promises.👏🏽

This was not about saving the Governor’s job but about our future. 💯

Luciano and our Seeds of Resistance team really showed up and demonstrated the power of youth organizers! They ‘spent months canvassing and phone banking in the Central Valley. And it worked. In Merced County, where 61% of the population is Latinx, 75% of Latinx residents voted against the recall.’

What does a honest reflection and reckoning with 9/11 and its aftermath mean? For nonprofits, that could look like partnering with and supporting organizations led by and serving Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, Sikh and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities. Nonprofits working with these communities continue to highlight ongoing effects of the post 9/11 backlash and the War on Terror, from mental health to family separations.

How could you include AMEMSA groups in your coalitions and networks? What connections can be made between the issues that you or your organization address and those affecting AMEMSA communities?

The effects of policy decisions made after 9/11 changed the lives of several communities and continue to pervade our lives today. by Deepa Iyer. September 10th, 2021.”

Image 2: White quotation mark at the top left. White text on blue background reads, “My generation faced a crisis point on Sept. 11, 2001. Within 24 hours of that terrible day, I remember being part of emergency calls and meetings with Washington, D.C. area activists to address the backlash that was targeting Muslims, Sikhs, Afghans, Iraqis, Arabs, and South Asians. Those initial days catalyzed South Asians, Muslims, Arabs, Afghans, Iraqis, and Sikhs to advocate and organize against the climate of hate and flawed government policies, which led to devastating consequences that still reverberate 20 years later.”

The Texas law banning abortion went into effect at midnight CDT. The law bans abortion after 6 weeks—a point at which most people don’t even know they are pregnant.
As Texas lawmakers, the courts, and other states continue on the dangerous path of banning abortion, we are deeply proud of the work we did to ensure New Mexico will remain a place where our doors and our hearts are open.
“Our decisions are sacred. We will be respected in the healthcare decisions we make for ourselves, and our families.”

We’re featured alongside @acluofil and @reprorights in this new article from @prismreports about #RepealPNA! Requiring young people to notify parents of intended abortions limits their autonomy, access to health care, and could endanger their lives. It’s also an ageist attempt at controlling and demeaning young people through stigmatizing abortion care.

@prismreports recently interviewed Breeshia Wade, author of #GrievingWhileBlack, on how we can make space for our grief after such a tumultuous year. Wade also discusses some common misconceptions about grief, including the belief that grief only presents itself in our saddest moments. Read more in the full article at the link in our bio!

Wade’s book, #GrievingWhileBlack, is available at www.northatlanticbooks.com.

ID: Quote graphic with a red textured background. At the top of the graphic is a blue teardrop. The text reads in black: A major misconception is that grief is all sadness and all gloom and doom, and that things that are uncomfortable should be avoided because there’s no joy in it... grief is embedded, even in our happiest experiences. The quote attribution reads: Breeshia Wade (for PRISM).

"Sponsorship is an act of solidarity where folks leverage their resources, individually or collectively, to provide asylum-seekers with what they need—with an eye towards their independence. The government has consistently failed trans people in the U.S. and it becomes more layered when we consider the lives of trans and LGBTQ asylum-seekers. They need support and that doesn’t end with being freed from an ICE prison. Sponsorship provides a space to intervene, and to help meet those needs upon release. It’s an imperfect solution, but it keeps trans people out of deadly ICE prisons and hopefully safe from homelessness until folks can move out on their own." - Michael Galvan, sponsorship outreach and support coordinator at the Santa Fe Dreamers Project
