Ex Libris Hans Müller-Brauel. A glimpse into a private library and the personality of its owner. This beautifully illustrated Ex Libris bookplate for Hans Müller-Brauel combines a rustic cottage, towering trees, and a contemplative portrait, creating a scene that reflects both a love of nature and the quiet pursuit of knowledge. Every engraved detail reminds us that bookplates were more than ownership marks—they were personal works of art that told a story before the first page was ever turned. Original bookplates like this preserve the history of readers, collectors, and the artists who transformed simple labels into miniature masterpieces. Whether tucked inside a treasured first edition or discovered decades later, each Ex Libris carries the legacy of a private library and the individual who built it. Do you collect books for their stories—or for the remarkable histories hidden inside them? The DeMille Estate is recently back on the market—a fitting moment to look beyond the headlines and behind the walls of one of Los Feliz’s most storied properties. We were entrusted with the home’s architectural restoration and renovation nearly a century after B. Cooper Corbett’s original 1913 design. The home was famously Cecil B. DeMille’s private residence from 1916 until his death in 1959 (and, most recently, home to @angelinajolie, the property’s first buyer following our restoration). Our charge was to restore the house and rebuild its relationship to the two acres surrounding it. Working with the lot’s own character—sloping lawns, terraces, and mature trees—we composed a landscape that draws the property’s elements, inside and out, into a single, reciprocally complementary whole. The six-year-long project was an exercise in studied understanding and delicate balance—sustaining narrative continuity with a vision from a mind and era long bygone, and recontextualizing its spirit and sensibility for modern legibility and living without stripping away the historicity and character that make the house’s legacy. Inside, we kept the living room’s Doric columns, the molded ceilings, and a Prohibition-era wine cellar. Former servants’ quarters—a relic of antiquated household infrastructure—became a library and kitchen. We removed a breezeway that once bridged the home to Charlie Chaplin’s next door, but preserved the atrium that had been its point of origin. We raised ceilings where the structure allowed, laid new floors, and opened rooms with glass and skylights, foregrounding the home’s architectural heritage while establishing a single throughline between interior and exterior. Outside, the garden unfolds as a continuation and expansion of that narrative, descending the hillside toward the city view. Ex Libris Spotlight: Earle E. Bredwell One of our absolute favorite bookplates — and we’re not alone. A few fellow collectors have told us that if they could ever own just one ex libris, this would be it. A well-dressed gentleman, perched high on a ladder in his private library, fully immersed in a book — it captures the quiet joy of collecting, reading, and living among books. This plate reads “From the Library of Earle E. Bredwell” and evokes the soul of a lifelong bibliophile. A timeless scene that resonates with anyone who’s ever gotten lost in a good book surrounded by shelves of their own. Pleasures from Spain: “The Ballards hired Brian Tichenor and Raun Thorp of Tichenor & Thorp Architects to make a landscape worthy of the house and extend indoor living spaces into terraces framed with plants. The architects literally took the home’s layout outside, mirroring its strong central axis in an entry path edged with westringria, campanula and bronze flax. Beside the front door, they restored an old fountain, adding a tiled pool and extra water jets and installing a bench nearby so the scene could be enjoyed. “Previously,” says Tichenor, “there was nowhere to sit. The outdoors wasn’t articulated or defined, except as leftover space from the house. Our job was to create those specific, missing places.” - written by @susanheeger for @latimes Architecture: @tichenorandthorparchitects Landscape Design: @tichenorandthorparchitects Interior Decorating: @anniehkelly Photography: @melbalevickphotos Courtyard Awning Design: @tichenorandthorparchitects Courtyard Awning Fabricator: #awningsofdistinction by @marineawningco Click the link "Pleasures from Spain" in our bio to read the full article. . . . #tichenorandthorparchitects #tichenorandthorp #architecture #designinspiration #interiors #interiordesign #bicoastal #OutsideIn #Vendome #interiorsinspo #designinspo #outdoorfireplace #backyarddesign #dreamgardens #landscapedesign

Sunday Serenity: We reenvisioned this Andalusian inspired garden for the #ChimorroHouse in #BeverlyHills. The home's current calm belies its original purpose, as it was commissioned as a speakeasy. Lucky for us prohibition is over and an evening cocktail in the garden is fair game. . . . 📸:@melbalevickphotos #chimorrohouse #beverlyhillshomes #royseldonprice #californiacasa #privatelibrary #paulwilliams #paulwilliamsbar #speakeasy #californiahistory #tichenorandthorparchitects #outsidein #vendome #greengarden #gardeninspo #livingbydesign #landscapedesign #gardengoals #archdesign #californiacasa #privatelibrary #housebeautiful #gardenenvy

The one and only @cww22, doing his thing. If I could go back in time I would be this kid. He’s an amazing football player (like being toured around the countries top University’s like freakin Nebraska University! I love it. It’s like that great scene from Jerry Maguire. . . I’m currently working on getting his demo reel to the athletic director over at my alma mater, The University of Texas at Austin. We’ll see what happens. Texas is a little too kooky about their football. At the same time, this kid is so talented he’s putting together a music demo to shop around. You got to hear this boy play? I’ll shoot up a good video of some blues and be sure to post shortly. Standby. . . Chris is truly one of the most engaging, thoughtful, intelligent, hard-working, charismatic, talented, humble, athlectic, empathic and just plain coolest young men I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet! . . The fact that this young man plays the guitar like Buddy Guy and that he’s only 15 yrs old is just icing on the cake! Great job raising such a beautiful, young man (inside and outside), @private.library!! And don’t even get me started on your daughter?! I just assume she’s not on social media? But she is the sweetest, most articulate yet soft-spoken young woman that I know. You guys have done an amazing job. Keep up the good work. ⚜️❤️🙏👊🏽 . . #music #talent #universityoftexas #photography #perspective #photoiphone iphone7plusphoto #creativity #art #whodat
