I reviewed my first @privatepressbrewing bottle over six years ago. That unlabeled b0 of Life is Round still resonates. Starting an exclusively stout and barleywine invite only society was ambitious even by 2020 pre pandemic standards. The through line for all of the PP bottles is this: zero compromises.

I don’t mean this in a hack corporate branding way. There’s no “OUR STORY” on the label with a trite anecdote about the problem they are trying to solve. Private press makes bottles for people who mean to be drinking them. They’re expensive, elusive, challenging, and complex. They haven’t had to cave to making 4 packs of strata slurry. If you don’t want their beers then some maladjusted very particular person will buy it in a cellar sale.

The austere nature of these barleywines isn’t a bug it’s a feature. The 19.4% abv alone is enough to draw the wince inducing “IS IT EVEN STILL BEER AT THAT POINT I SEND MY EX MONEY ON CASH APP BC SHES BLOCKED ME EVERYWHERE ELSE.” This has a 4.6 on untappd and none of the reviews are some accidental whim. It is good because Brad Clark makes beers for a super niche consumer who is deep into the beer scene. Twin flames amirite.

This does its best to hide the triple barrel and fusel heat in waves of raisinettes. Three racked casks just draws and saturates so much that Anchorage Gabe looks onward knowing this plight. There’s no such thing as bakers Werthers but that butterscotch is tempered with waves of tannic bitterness akin to Riesin candy. The gumline has waves of separating halvah/rugelach. If we had some black and white cookie we could sell this at Jewish delis but no beer is perfect.

This emerging genre of hyper casking commands insane time, care, and capital. These are expensive bottles, tiny and furious. The person who strives so hard for nonchallance misses gems like this in life. You can’t shrug and pretend you don’t care, egalitarian with a Coors banquet, that passivity is not what this type of beer is about. This is for weirdos deep in the game. Go to the PP pasting room and listen to fusion jazz on vinyl. Theres 3 beers like this on tap and they’re $14 for a 4 ounce pour and that’s i
