The road to El Dorado, a paradise of birds.
.
The El Dorado Bird Reserve was created to preserve a section of one of the most fragile and important sites in Colombia and the world, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
.
This reserve protects 2,530 acres, all preserved in perpetuity, home to many unique plant and animal species, including 337 bird species - 19 of which are endemic (found nowhere else on the planet).
.
The road to their lodge was extremely muddy, rocky, and challenging. I was thankful to have my Dirtbag Diaries companion along for the adventure, despite him repeatedly sticking a microphone in my face (go figure).
Haha

Continuing with my collection of favourite moments from Colombia, this was on my first morning in Los Llanos. Jetlagged and energised with excitement, I had barely slept the night before and I was ready to go with camera in hand long before the sun had come up; the birds were just starting to wake up and you could hear the bone chilling calls of the stirring Howler Monkeys. We floated down the Orinoco river, and just as the sun came up we spotted a foraging family of Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta seniculus). Most of them disappeared into the shadows and branches before I could get a photo, but this mother took her sweet time and I got to savour this golden moment. Just look at how tightly the baby's tail is wrapped around her mother's! .

There's a lot more to see in the jungles of Vaupes than just birds, like this curious Black Titi (Cheracebus lugens). We were also lucky enough to spot an elusive Mottle-faced Tamarin (Saguinus inustus) - a curious little monkey with pointed ears and a face like a bat - but I didn't manage to get a photo of that one

A stunning male Tawny-tufted Toucanet (Selenidera nattereri) perched in the jungle canopy of the Tayazú trail south of Mitú. This rare toucanet is one of Mitú's most sought-after species, and the trails around the capital of Vaupés department are the best place in Colombia to spot one. They often advertise their presence through their distinctive croaking call but can be hard to see given their propensity to remain high in the canopy. Thankfully this beauty afforded me a nice glimpse
