Please join us for the final program of our summer exhibition, a gallery walkthrough on Saturday, August 22, 2:00 - 3:30 PM with curator Alison McNulty and artists Marcy Chevali, Shanti Grumbine, David Licata, and Zachary Skinner.

Shanti Grumbine will also introduce her Curated Reading List for our Open Reading Room program.

Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world is on view through August 29
Saturdays & Sundays, 1:00-5:00 pm
& by appointment

Only two weekends left!

Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world brings together works across sculpture, installation, painting, sound, photography, and works on paper. The exhibition, curated by Gallery Director Alison McNulty, includes work by Hudson Valley and NYC artists Emil Alzamora, Marcy Chevali, Daniel Giordano, Shanti Grumbine, Alison Kudlow, David Licata, Processing Collapse (Michael Asbill and Ripley Butterfield), and Zachary Skinner, along with the posthumous work of celebrated Newburgh artist, Gerardo Castro. While some artists harness flame and heat as a means of material manipulation from one state to another, others document and imagine the releasing and healing potential of burning. Creative alchemy, both literal and metaphorical, stands as a testament to the transient –and transcendent—nature of matter and bodies in an era marked by ecological precarity and political volatility.

Free & open to the public at Ann Street Gallery, 104 Ann Street, Newburgh, NY

Processing Collapse’s work is on view through August 29 in, “Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world” curated by @mcnulty_alison.

@processingcollapse

Michael Asbill & Ripley Butterfield of Processing Collapse share:

"Artifact of Collapse is a segment of a white ash tree killed by emerald ash borer (EAB). Half of the remnant wood was carbonized in a charcoal retort. This process reduces the wood of the tree to its sequestered carbon, making it archival. The form and grain of this ash tree are preserved along with the evidence of its demise: the winding galleries visible across the cambium layer.

Processing Collapse is a public art project about extinction made primarily for public libraries. This work began with marking the collapse of our regional ash trees due to the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). In just over a decade, 99% of the mature ash in our region died as a result of EAB infestation. Seen another way, 7% of our forest was lost in the blink of an eye. We want to acknowledge the magnitude of that loss as a relevant, historic event with lasting impacts on our lives and ecosystems. Noticing the impacts of non-native insects, fungal blights, and extraction on other tree species has inspired the expansion of our research. We strive to build relationship between the public and our changing forests in our last free commons.

Our work is wholly collaborative and non-hierarchical. Michael’s rural background, public art experience, and familiarity with the forest contrasts and coalesces with Ripley’s urban upbringing, years of working in libraries, and committed writing practice. Together, we are joyfully shaping a socially engaged project for diverse audiences. Our unconventional collaboration speaks to the relevance of this subject across demographic lines.”

Beautiful exhibition @annstreetgallery curated by @mcnulty_alison 💥💥💥 The visual echoes, a physical presence sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, and the quality of craft, make this a must-see experience. Plus this is the last weekend of Millicent Young’s installation for @strongroom just next door (last image). If you stop by, let me know in case I’m in my studio.

Here’s a recap of our artists-in-residence @michaelasbill and @ripleyfolio of @processingcollapse who, over the course of seven weeks, transformed the YES Gallery into a research and design studio to develop a public art proposal for the @woodstocklibrary 🍃
_____

“Noticing American chestnut stump sprouts on Overlook Mountain during our first week in residence was the starting point for our project. We realized that the functionally extinct tree was a major presence in the forest at the time when ‘the story of modern Woodstock really begins’.

We are indebted to all those who stopped by during our residency to have conversations with us about the project.

We’d like to offer a special thanks to Tara Foley who invited us into the space.

Emily Jones, the dedicated archivist at WAAM, located information and artworks that were vital to our research trajectory.

Ira Brandes brought us a generous gift of two antique chestnut boards.

Leslie Gerber, Woodstock Library trustee, invited us to speak with the library board.

We thank Woodstock Library director Ivy Gocker for embracing our project and joining us on our final day in residence to hear our preliminary proposal.

We look forward to making a formal proposal before the end of the year.”

- Michael Asbill and Ripley Butterfield, Processing Collapse

Thank YOU, Michael and Ripley, for sharing your process and concepts with us and the community!

We’re thrilled to welcome @michaelasbill and @ripleyfolio to the YES Gallery as our artists-in-residence for their public art project @processingcollapse.
⁣
Through October 15, the YES Gallery will become a research center for a permanent artwork proposal at the new @WoodstockLibrary. ⁣
⁣
The walls will become an active project mind map. As the work evolves and ideas find focus, the space will slowly transform into a design studio where Asbill and Butterfield begin to structure and visualize emerging concepts. ⁣
⁣
The artists will be present for public engagement from 2-5 PM every Thursday for the duration of this exhibition.⁣
⁣
Please stop by during this time to engage in conversation and collaboration!
