Feeling so thankful after our first-ever official in-person U.S. PDCA Symposium! 💙🌊

Thank you to our PDCA executive board and interns for the time, work, and care they put into making this weekend happen. I’m so grateful to have people who believe in what we are building and help bring it to life.

It meant so much to see coaches learning together, sharing ideas, and having those natural conversations between sessions, over meals, and when someone stayed a little longer to keep talking. After so many Zoom meetings, connecting face to face again felt especially meaningful.

Our first one may not have been perfect, but I am proud that we made it happen. We have something to build on, and I’m excited to make each symposium even more valuable and successful moving forward.

A huge thank-you to the Raymond C. Rude Supporting Foundation for supporting the symposium and to @sidelinescout for sponsoring our Saturday social! Thank you to our speakers for sharing their knowledge and to everyone who made the trip and came ready to learn and connect.

I’m excited to keep educating our diving coaches, bringing people together in person, and creating meaningful change in the sport we love. This weekend reminded me how much can happen when we get people in the same room. I cannot wait to see where we go from here! 💙

We’re in! I’m excited to share that I’ve been invited to present “Beyond Medals” at the First International University Colloquium on Diving, Law, Science, and Sport Education, online October 27–28.

I’m sharing what we’ve done for years on the pool deck with athletes, families, and coaches at Wisconsin Dive Club. The medals mattered. So did the daily grind of helping young people grow, teaching coaches to lead, and creating standards athletes could trust.

I’m proud to bring a piece of that experience to an international diving community. Registration is open, with 188 people already signed up from 18 countries.

Coaches:
As we continue to find ways to best serve this community, we are looking for input on what kinds of information you would like to see, or not see; or any services you would find beneficial. In addition to revisiting our annual reports, we are also examining the feasibility of offering a “Virtual Assistant Coach” service. We would need fairly significant interest in this service to move forward.

VIRTUAL ASSISTANT COACH SERVICE
An annual subscription-based model ($100-120ish) that helps to fill the gap in things that can benefit coaches and programs but that are time consuming.

Examples include:
* Access to filtered transfer portal with brief recruiting notes, updated weekly (Normally $25)
* Early access to any new reports (no additional cost for reports)
* Data sheets with running average scores by place for NCAA conference, zone (& NCAA qualification), and championships.
* Downloadable & editable documents for program organization. Ex.: Full year plan template, program promotion docs for recruits, team data charts, etc.
* Social media graphic templates
* Customized graphic overlays for social posts
* Regular communication of branding and marketing trends, tips, tools, and tactics
* Access to employment info such as general salary data, bonuses/perks, and more.
* Annual contract review (Normally $50)

NCAA DIVING COACH DATA & PERSPECTIVES
* Is there interest in doing a new report? We didn’t do one in 25-26 in large part due to the time commitment and the fact that we are still getting a fairly low response rate overall, which means incomplete data, etc. (If interested, any suggestions on improving the response rate?)
* Is there other data you would like to see compiled?
* Would you consider paying a small amount (Maybe $5-10) for the report?

The NCAA Transfer Portal saw a little extra action after Pitt Head Coach Chase Kreitler stepped down with the men and women each having 7 new entries after the window had closed. But we are finally caught up and have a bunch of new data to share.

The Ups/Downs from prelims to finals are always an important metric, so we took a look at the +/- action through the portal:

• Marshall women took a big hit even after reinstating their program.

• Similarly, the Cal Baptist men have had a handful sign elsewhere after their program was dropped.

• Washington State women lost 4 swimmers in the portal but added 5, making them one of the biggest movers in both directions.

• One year into his tenure as the diving coach at Michigan, Brandon Loschiavo is rebuilding through the portal, adding 3 women and 1 man to the roster. That is all of the adds UM has so far.

There is a significant difference in how the women and men are moving between divisions:

• There was very little inter-division movement on the women's side, 9 of 102 for < 9%.

• Nearly 25% of the men transferring moved divisions with 22 of the 89 signings so far.

📈 MORE DATA ON OUR SITE 📉
While we love sharing our insights here on IG, sometimes it's just too much to condense. So... we've posted a variety of spreadsheets for viewing on our website SpringboardIndiana.com/data where you can breakdowns of every D-I school active in the portal as well as a breakdown of every conference across all three divisions. You will also find all of the totals for each division and gender.

Let us know your thoughts and what else you might like to see in the comments.

The NCAA Transfer Portal window has closed for swimming and diving. We've put a little extra work into digging into the data this year and have some new insights to share.

Last year roster cuts created havoc for the portal. This year it is much more tame. That being said, we saw that 12.9% of men’s portal entrants are Designated Student Athletes still looking for a new home (women were 14%). We have a a similar number of signings, and withdrawals, from the spring entrants.

Here are some things to note as we dove deeper into the data this year:

• Youngstown State led the way with 14 total entries after head coach Brad Smith stepped down in March. Six have since withdrawn with only 1 having signed elsewhere.

• Cal Baptist had 13 entries after their program was cut. Four of those 13 have signed elsewhere so far.

• Nearly 70% of entrants are still listed as active, showing just how unlikely it is for most to successfully navigate the portal

• 78 different schools (more than half of D-I programs) with at least one entry into the portal

• 63% are receiving some form of athletic aid (women were 72%), same as last year

• 22% are international athletes, up 3% from last year

• 44 athletes are listed as signed, down just a handful from this time last year (Remember, there is a difference between a commitment and a signing and the NCAA does not report commitments to the portal)

• Of the 44 signed athletes, only 2 are divers (4.5%) despite making up 9.4% of the portal. That ratio is very similar to what we saw on the women’s side this year.

• International athletes sign at a higher rate than domestic AND make up a greater percentage of signings than entries (38.6% signings but only 28.7% of entries)

• There were 4 athletes transferring down to a D-II program (as of May 1). Last year there were , that made such a move, but as a percentage of total transfers the numbers are basically the same.

• Total number of entries is the lowest it has been since 2019-20 (pg 6)

• Grad transfers were down slightly, but as a percentage of total transfers the numbers are basically the same. (pg 7)

• Of the 50 signed athletes, only 4 are divers (8%) despite making up 17% of the portal

• International athletes sign at a higher rate than domestic AND make up a greater percentage of signings than entries (30% signings but only 22% of entries)

• There were ZERO athletes transferring down to a D-II or D-III program (as of May 1). Last year there were 20 that made such a move.

• Total number of entries is the lowest it has been since 2019-20 (pg 7)

• Grad transfers remained the same, which makes sense with no Covid years remaining (pg 8)

UPDATED: We fixed the issue regarding individual SEC school totals. Our apologies on missing this section when updating from last year’s data. Unfortunately sometimes mistakes happen when managing this much data. We appreciate everyone letting us know.

As different as the women’s portal looks this year, the men’s version is even further off of last year.

Last year roster cuts created havoc for the portal. This year it is much more tame. That being said, we are showing about 15% of portal entrants are Designated Student Athletes still looking for a new home. We only have a handful of signings from the spring entrants so far, so we will keep our eyes on that. Remember, there is a difference between a commitment and a signing and the NCAA does not report commitments to the portal.

The biggest appearances on the men’s side this year are Cal Baptist, which is cutting their men’s program, and Youngstown State, where their head coach stepping down.

After all the major roster cuts last year, one stat that stands out is the overall SEC numbers. Where they went from 76 last years to just 13 right now.

Well, we all knew that the transfer portal this year would look nothing like last year. So, here is your first glimpse at how things are shaking out, starting with the women. (We will update with Men's next Monday.)

The biggest player on the women's side this year is Marshall, which has 20 athletes who all entered when it was announced that their program would be cut after the season. Since then, the school has backtracked and reinstated the program. 4 of those 20 have already signed elsewhere, meaning the fallout from the fiasco is far from over for the Herd.

Most divers skip steps.

Motor patterns are built on land.
Posture and coordination are developed through repetition.
Then we transfer the skill to the water… and finally to the board.

Simple. Clear. Intentional.

Clear cues. Precise feedback. Better execution.
