Did you know that Brazil’s Congress just approved federal affirmative action in the country for another 10 years?

Brazil has one of the most expansive and successful affirmative action programs in higher education.

Today, Brazil's federal universities are more than 50 percent Black, a reflection of Brazil's population.

Forty years ago, that number barely exceeded 10 percent.

This is the success of Brazil's entire Black movement. But the work of one man stands out—Frei David Raimundo dos Santos.

Frei David Santos is a Catholic priest and he has spent the last 30 years fighting to increase access to higher education for Black and impoverished students in Brazil.

But 46 years ago, he didn't even see himself as Black.

Most of Frei David's work has been accomplished through Educafro, the non-profit he founded more than 25 years.

I'm honored to have written this profile of Frei David, who many people have compared to a Nelson Mandela or even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of Brazil.

Thank you to the Black Catholic Messenger who gave me as much space as I wanted to tell his ENTIRE story.
