NEXT THURS. APRIL 30 at 12:30 PM in GOLD ROOM, SUBO Join Brooklyn College alum (Class of '92) and University of Chicago Classics Professor Patrice Rankine as he looks at reworkings of classical stories that challenge the idea that beauty (or aesthetic value) belongs first and foremost to the ancient “original.” Scholars have treated Greek and Roman texts as untouchable models— sources that later generations admire and therefore adapt in a continuous cycle. But Black writers and artists have long taken a different approach. Their work shows how classical myths can be transformed. Focusing on the myth of Icarus, he will look at how Black artists return to this figure—sometimes as a symbol of hope and daring, other times of danger or loss. Patrice Rankine, Professor in Classics, earned his BA in Ancient Greek magna cum laude from Brooklyn College, City University of New York City (CUNY), and his Ph.D. in classical languages and literatures from Yale University. In addition to his scholarship, he has served in several significant administrative roles, including as Dean for the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Richmond. He is also a committed teacher who won an Excellence in Teaching Award in the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue University. He researches the Greco-Roman classics and their afterlife, particularly as they pertain to literature, theater, and the history and performance of race. He is author of Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Title Ulysses in Black: Ralph Ellison, Classicism, and African American Literature (University of Wisconsin Press, 2006) and Aristotle and Black Drama: A Theater of Civil Disobedience (Baylor University Press, 2013), as well as coauthor of The Oxford Handbook of Greek Drama in the Americas (Oxford University Press, 2015). His current book projects include Theater and Crisis: Myth, Memory, and Racial Reckoning, 1964–2020 (Lever Press, 2024) and Slavery and the Book (Harvard University Press).

TODAY 12:50 PM Join us for this year's Arlene Fromchuck-Feili Memorial Lecture by Kyle Khellaf from the University of California, Riverside. He will speak on: "Cracking the Postclassical Maghreb." Since antiquity, the Maghreb (North Africa) has experienced numerous waves of colonization, conquest, and settlement. During the 19th and 20th centuries, these ancient models of Mediterranean imperialism became central interlocutors in the colonial imaginary, only to be challenged by Maghrebi writers, artists, and freedom fighters. Khellaf examines several North African sites of contested classicism and ideological rupture; including the crumbling triumphal monuments in Tazoult (Lambaesis), fractured Punico-Libyan inscriptions from Dougga, and cafés bombed during the Battle of Algiers. Ultimately, such reimagined histories can shatter illusions about both colonial and postcolonial rule in the Maghreb. Monday, September 29, at 12:50 PM Gold Room, SUBO
