POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We are elated to announce that we are writing a book. A collection of personal stories about my experiences growing up Cambodian in South Philly, fighting in the mosh pits of the Philadelphia restaurant industry and falling in love with Rachel. When religion and ghost stories are in a cook book, you should expect some twists and turns tied up with recipes from our unique journey. With help from the great @adamerace (@palizzisc book and Laurel book) and legendary @ihatealexlau , we look forward to sharing this body of work. A Buddhist bow to @francis_lam and @clarksonpotter for the stage.

We waited far too long to visit @zeppolirestaurant — this intimate 35 seat BYOB restaurant in 📍Collingswood, NJ most certainly lives up to its reputation for incredible Sicilian cuisine 🤌🍝 Each dish was better than the last, we cannot wait to book another reservation to come back and try more 😋 #philmytummy

Buon anno! Belated thanks to @adamerace for including our Polenta alla Matesina in his "2025 10 Best Dishes in Philly." Discovering the dish was one of the highlights of our fall immersion in Molise with @where.time.becomes.a.loop. You gotta go to discover these things, so we'll be back in Abruzzo and Molise next week: first at the Sant'Antonio Abate celebrations in Villavallelonga, and then for deeper dives into the wild Monti della Laga and Alto Vastese areas in Abruzzo and the Alto Sannio in Molise (follow us here).

We hope you're all happy and well. Many people woke up today without healthcare and childcare; many more continue to live in fear, targeted for who they are, their appearance, where they're from. We love you, Philly: we're proud to call this diverse and welcoming city home, and we'll keep fighting for our neighbors.

If you're free this Sunday (1/4), stop by to help us support @philabundance: we'll be cooking up and serving frascareglie with ragu outside over a wood fire and pouring red wine, all gratis and in honor of Villavallelonga. We ask only for a donation of nonperishable food items/checks/online donations for Philabundance, which feeds 130,000 Philadelphians every week. If you can't donate, you're still invited and welcome.

So: buon anno, in bocca al lupo, e auguri. Let's be there for each other. Elbows up, sticks on the ice, lean into the wind - we got this. To paraphrase that great American, Bugs Bunny: we'll be scared later. Right now, we're too mad.

Ok: our frascareglie & vino rosso outdoor benefit for @philabundance WILL take place this Sunday, Jan. 4, 5-8pm (current forecast is chilly but clear, with Iggles on our TV).

Once again: the frascareglie & wine are served gratis. But we are requesting donations to @philabundance in the form of checks/online donations/nonperishable food items. They feed over 130,000 of our area neighbors weekly; no donation is too small.

If you're unable to donate, you're still invited; we only ask you to help spread the word. ALL ARE WELCOME (we'll have fire pits and patio heaters going, but wear your layers).

ATTENTION: this Wednesday's Aperitivo al Fresco - due to a less-than-ideal forecast - will now take place on THURSDAY, April 17. The forecast is for sunshine and 60+ degree temperatures, so we'll follow the sun...

$30 for Abruzzese snacks and tastes of off-list Greek wines poured by @chrisoh_2.0 and @russydrank (recently back from Hellas to meet some very dedicated producers of natural wine). $14 for full evening pours.

We start promptly at 5pm and end at 7:30. No reservations! We can't wait to see you.

Forbes Magazine features our Panarda (the 9-hour, 40+ course lunch/dinner) and its origins in Villavallelonga, Abruzzo, home to the feast since 1657.

Thanks to Irene S. Levine for the beautiful article. And thanks to the people of Villavallelonga for inviting us to this January's feast honoring Sant'Antonio Abate.

We'll bring what we experience there to share with Philly at our next Panarda, on Sunday, February 16, 2025 (details in the article; link in bio).

We held our first Panarda in 2011, a 40+- course, hours-long feast peculiar to Abruzzo, which has since become an annual event. In Abruzzo's hinterlands, near the boundary of the oldest of its three national parks, Villavallelonga, a borgo of 900 souls, has held a Panarda nearly every year since 1657.

Villavallelonga got wind of our Panarda after it was featured in a @washingtonpost article by @domenicacooks. This past June, Villavallelonga's mayor and vice-mayor made a detour from visits to Toronto and Rochester to meet us. And thus began a relationship that means so much more to us than we can explain.

Friend, writer, and historian Danielle Oteri (@arthuravefoodtours & @feast__travel) talks about our meeting in Episode 1 of her podcast Tante Belle Cose: The Miracle of the Panarda - link in bio.

Delightful dinner @levirtuphila chatting up Cathy and Francis with Clare @profiletip recapping our fabulous days in Pacentro, Sulmona & surrounding Abruzzo mountains this summer.
Tuna Crudo pristine with @ianbrendle Piennolo tomatoes, which taste like they were on the vine until the last second, bursting with vine flavor, zucchini sformato super tasty, Cavatelli verde w/ mushrooms, spectacular Maccaruni ai ferretto w/ house made ‘ndjuja sausage, Tropea onions, pecorino, Rana Pescatrice all’acqua pazza a party of seafood and fish on a plate. Plus, the delicious @ariannaocchipinti Terre Siciliane Rosso SP68 a favorite blend of Nero D’avola and Frappato - bad lighting for food photos, great tasting food!

ABRUZZO Day Four also known as: the day we ate too much…. or did we?? We took a day trip to the beautiful village Pettorano Sul Grizio - a favorite of MC Escher (the first picture) who also loved Abruzzo. We climbed small streets to get to the town square and lunch at @il_torchio_ristorante This was a very special meal - actually my favorite of the trip - highlights included: Polenta from this town is made in copper pots, takes two hours and comes out more like bread, it was moist and fluffy; an incredible lentil soup made with Montepulciano (not pictured); a simple pasta with local truffle; perfectly cooked lamb chops and a cheese course w local honey comb served tableside. A huge storm blew in and the power went out (thus some darker photos) our waiter brought out a lamp and poured us a grappa, just had to wait it out. We then headed back for our last night in Pacentro and dinner @lantica_locanda_ a new restaurant with a menu of more “historic” dishes, very simple preparations so the flavors shine through like potato, cabbage and beans cooked for four hours (another trip highlight) liver, lamb done two ways and tomato bread. 19 courses in one day - we did it!!! #abruzzo

ABRUZZO Day Two! Set out with our guide Massimo for a seven mile hike up 2100 ft to hit views at 6000 ft in @parcomaiella_official national park. It took five hours and we got amazing views, saw Shepards tending to their flocks and learned about the local habitat. For a post hike snack, we stopped at a magical little spot you have to walk up a hill to reach @fonteromana and enjoyed antipasto and grilled lamb chops. Headed back to Pacentro for dinner at Taverna Caldora - the best restaurant views in town! After dinner, a stroll to the center of town for live music… great ending to a great day! #abruzzo

“Do you and Scott want to come hiking with my cousin and I in Abruzzo?” was the question posed to me from our friend Clare and of course we said yes! What they planned has been an EPIC trip of Abruzzo from the mountains to the Sea and we will end in Rome (we are on day 8 of the 12 day trip) Here is day one: off the plane and to lunch in the hill town of Scanno @ristorante_terra_scanno for Smoked Carpaccio; Fettuccine with Garlic, Anchovies, Parmesan and Pistachio Pesto; and Chitarra aka “Guitar” spaghetti with sheep, candied lemon and mint. Village strolled and I fell in love with the many fountains that flow with mountain water, we visited the heart shaped lake and then headed towards Pacentro, our home base for the next four days with a stop @confetti_pelino for some candy. Finished up the night @allacasavecchia the local cheese maker with a sampling and some local wine. #abruzzo
