POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My posse was in fact on Broadway in July. I know I’ve been a bit braggadocious on the socials lately but I’ma go ahead and say it. My posse is better than your posse! Unless of course, we have the same posse. Yale ‘03 gave me some really great gifts of friendship.

Looking back on my summer vacation in Seattle as we gear up for fall 2026 semester. So long summer, it was nice knowing ya 👋🏽. Except for this heat. You can keep the heat.

154/158 "With vast ambition and the urgency of personal history, Model Schools in the Model City reveals a truth hidden in plain sight: the struggle for equal access to public education―long a route to freedom for Black Americans―was a battle over buildings. The power to shape the architecture of schools in the nation’s capital, Amber N. Wiley compellingly argues, determined who would have access to the fundamental rights of democracy. This book is a stirring lesson in how the built environment records the hopes and frustrations of its society." ― Brian Goldstein #MAAHStoneAtoZ @maahmuseum @profwiley @upittpress

I was sitting up in bed with the Christmas cooties (they’re pretty much gone now) reminiscing on better days with some of my faves.

Very much belated birthday weekend post, part 1. Don’t go getting confused, my bday was indeed in September. #virgogang

Sunday Funday.

Family. Friends. Fabulous colleagues.

Thank you all for coming out yesterday to my inaugural book signing event. Thank you for humoring me by sitting through my reading of the intro snippet, and the presentation of background info and stats. Thank you for your patience as I navigated the logistics of a book talk/book signing/book selling, something I had never done before (but will be doing a lot more of in the near future, OK?).

It was a pleasure to share this special occasion with you all. So much fun I’m still recovering.

Mardi Gras beads, mixed media, 12x24 in (2).

This diptych recalls the joy of carnival season in New Orleans. Each parade krewe has signature “throws” that represent a theme related to their unique histories. Look for the acorn, shoes, and doubloons!

Conference is over and I’m back in Philly but I shall be marinating on New Orleans for some time to come. Great being in conversation with folks about the work, wonderful to represent the CPCRS and Tanner House partnership. Fantastic catching up with my peeps and walking these city streets.

🔔Calling all Penn students🔔

HSPV 6200 // Revolutionary Approaches to Philadelphia’s Black Heritage

This seminar is a deep dive into Black heritage sites in Philadelphia, with the purpose of developing documentation and historic context around these underrepresented and threatened community assets ahead of the Semiquincentennial of 2026. The class grows out of a series of conversations between the Center for the Preservation of Civil Rights Sites (CPCRS), Black heritage stewards, architects, planners, creatives, and cultural producers in the city. To date, there has been no systematic investigation into Black historic assets in Philadelphia.

Many of these sites are in areas that are experiencing new development and gentrification. As the 2018-2023 Statewide Preservation Plan for Pennsylvania noted, “There is little diversity in the historic and archaeological resources that reflect Pennsylvania’s diverse ethnic and cultural history. In particular, African American resources in Pennsylvania are greatly underrepresented in National Register of Historic Places listings, by Pennsylvania Historical Markers, and in the CRGIS database of identified historic properties maintained by PA SHPO.[1] It is critical to protect, preserve, and elevate these histories.

This class forms the first part of an asset-based cultural heritage and tourism initiative by CPCRS. In partnership with our local stakeholders, we will engage in archival research, document buildings, conduct interviews, map resource locations, investigate creative approaches to storytelling and stewardship, and create public-facing content to share with city and state-level stakeholders. Visits to archives, museums, and heritage sites are required and essential for success in classrooms and assignments.

Of the many new projects, exciting successes and developments of #2023, perhaps the most meaningful has been the design and First Prize acknowledgement of our proposal, “In The Wake”, for the International #Africatown Competition.

This was followed by the incredible honor to present the design alongside #africatown descendants, activists, and a national community of thinkers, scholars and leaders as part of the “What Remains” Symposium this past Fall at @weitzman_school , convened by the fabulous @profwiley.

Closing this year with some images of our proposal’s design concept for the Africatown Museum, one of the three venues of Site 2 : Josephine Allen Site proposal. The concept of the museum creates a porous social “porch” to the surrounding community, reimagining the archive as an enlarged domestic space for the living history of Africatown to coexist with the everyday.

Setting the intention for manifesting visions in 2024 and beyond!

More on “What Remains” from @profwiley below. The whole symposium recording can be viewed on @weitzmanschool Youtube and at the CPCRS website.

This interdisciplinary symposium brought together scholars, activists, and designers dedicated to amplifying the history of Africatown, Alabama through ensuring community-led processes for racial, environmental, and economic justice. Africatown, also known as Plateau, is a community north of downtown Mobile that was founded in 1866 by formerly enslaved West Africans who were brought to Alabama in 1860 on the Clotilda, the last documented slave ship to arrive to the United States. The journey and the life of one of those founders, Cudjo (Kossula) Lewis is the subject matter of Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo.”

Featuring panelists and moderators Ann Cuss, Kwesi Daniels, Joycelyn Davis, Sylviane Diouf, Mario Gooden, Jerome Haferd, Renee Kemp-Rotan, Matt Kenyatta, Rashida Ng, Deborah Plant, Veda Robbins, Nick Tabor, and Joe Womack.
