For Want of (not) Measuring continues until Saturday 31st August @solaris_print and @project78gallery

Works by:
Andy Cluer
Caroline Jane Harris
Jim Hobbs
Lynda Laird
Johanna Love
Patrick Adam Jones

Curated by Dan Howard-Birt

This ongoing exhibition project by Jim Hobbs and Patrick Adam Jones. At each location a new curator is invited to steer the artists’ works in a particular direction through the introduction of further artists. Jim and Patrick’s ideas, research and art works are not allowed to become singular or definitive, but through this generous invitation not only does the conversation become richer, but they too might begin to understand their own works differently.

The question shared in this third iteration between the artists is what happens when data gathering apparatus is employed just beyond the threshold of its functionality or purpose? In an era driven by the collecting, collating and analysis of data, is it possible to look too hard for evidences? Can we observe too closely in our pursuit of a greater sense of clarity? These artists’ do not set out to misuse their measuring and ordering devices - from electron microscopes and taxonomic labelling to analog (and digital) photography and transpositional drawing - yet it is through the unrestrained use of these tools that new voids are seen to emerge, and strange time-spaces to open-up. These hitherto unexplored gaps, excavated within and between the rationally knowable, become fresh sites for speculation, mystery and wonder.

Posted @withregram • @spelmensch Right. I have a show on. Private view on Saturday 10th September, 2-5. Based on William Hogarth’s “A Rake’s Progress”.

It’s about death, abnegation, abejction and getting fat. All the cheerful subjects. Prints available! Bring the family!

Many thanks to @patrickadam_jones and @project78gallery for the opportunity. I’ll be there, possibly round the corner somewhere, but there, so come along and we can go and watch the sun go down on the beach afterwards. Just the two of us. It’ll be romantic.

It’s Beginning To And Back Again was always intended to be a changing exhibition. Despite only including one painting, the project allowed for constant over-painting and re-painting; the adding to and taking away that occurs in the studio, to continue to happen under public view. After 4 weeks, the painting was changed in a new way: small works by Casper White and Nina Royle were attached to the front of the painting. What does it mean to display the works of other artists within an object which contextualises and activates those works in such a complicated way? Are those works belittled, stifled, compromised? Or are they re-framed, becoming voices in an uncertain and inconclusive conversation?

Those other voices introduced into a single painting led to a discussion about whether the show itself could begin to bring in other works by other artists. Dan Howard-Birt and Project 78 Gallery invited Alice Hartley and Geraldine Swayne to make new works, or to lend existing works, that developed something of what they thought was happening within the changing painting.

It’s Beginning To And Back Again, Again proves that exhibitions do not have to be planned months in advance. It challenges the presumption that exhibitions are designed to convey fixed ideas. More than anything it celebrates the feeling that unfinished (or unfinishable) paintings and exhibitions are live things.

‘It’s Beginning To and Back Again, Again’ runs until Saturday May 21st @project78gallery
