Dance Base x Project X Scratch Night artist spotlight: Kiki Oladapo and Gaia Silvan ✨

Kiki Oladapo is a hip-hop dancer, choreographer and creative director based in Scotland. Rooted in London’s hip-hop scene, his practice blends hip-hop theatre, storytelling and cultural identity.

As a Black artist with Nigerian heritage, Kiki explores themes of identity, belonging, masculinity, family and connection through physical and expressive movement. His work draws inspiration from African mythology and folklore, while bringing hip-hop foundations into contemporary theatrical spaces.

Gaia Silvan is a multidisciplinary artist from Kintyre. They are a recent graduate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Contemporary Performance Practice. As a black-mixed race, neurodivergent, queer woman/person and coming from rural upbringings, Gaia has always been drawn to exploring the intricacies of our identities.

At Scratch Night, Kiki and Gaia will explore identity, isolation, connection and the cycles we create within our relationships, inspired by African, Caribbean and Scottish folklore.

Two lost beings encounter one another, drawn together by a strange sense of familiarity. Disconnected from their histories and from themselves, they begin to uncover fragments of a forgotten past.

As their relationship develops, memories begin to surface, revealing hints of who they once were and why they became lost. What begins as a chance encounter slowly becomes something more complex, as trust, power and control begin to shift between them...

Dance Base x Project X Scratch Night artist spotlight: MC Laffitte ✨

MC is a French-Cameroonian dancer and producer who has been part of the dance community in Scotland for the past ten years. She started dancing with Yasmin Doak company in Glasgow and then went onto training Hip-Hop and African diasporic dance styles with THREE60 Street dance company, where she received close mentorship from Divine Tasinda.

MC's practice is increasingly driven by the themes, questions and feelings that move her personally. She is interested in bringing to the stage the thoughts and emotions that stay with her, unsettle her, or ask to be explored. Through movement, MC tries to give these inner experiences a physical form, allowing herself to investigate what she may not yet understand or know how to articulate.

At Scratch Night, MC will present 'Clear'—a solitary exploration of isolation, endurance, and the quiet search for connection. As space contracts and presence shifts, a single body navigates the weight of being alone—reaching toward something that remains just out of reach. The piece is a physical exploration and a call made to the outside, knowing it might never be answered. It asks: how do we keep moving when there is nothing to move towards? And can we stay with emptiness without trying to fill it or escape from it?

Dance Base x Project X Scratch Night artist spotlight: Michael Arowolo ✨

Michael is a Nigerian-born multidisciplinary artist working across dance, choreography, drumming and music. He has over five years of experience working in theatre and the performing arts, including working with Project X Artist Voice for Dance International Glasgow, collaborating on 'Dictations: The Heart of the Sea' by Mele Broomes, 'Dive Into the Groove' with Whacking Scotland and Project X’s 'In the Making'.

At Scratch Night, Michael will be performing a section from a dance piece called 'Sacrilege,' which is still being developed. It’s inspired by his Nigerian roots and features various traditional dance movements such as Bata and Yengbe accompanied with the Bata drums from the Yoruba tribe and Yoruba chants (oral poetry).

Michael will be joined by Adenopo Samiat who features as a dancer on this piece.

We’re delighted to introduce Kemono Lebe-Riot ( @pyrixlumyn ) as the 2026 recipient of the Rosina Bonsu Bursary! A collaboration with @project_x_dance & @the_work_room_dance , this bursary honours Rosina Bonsu and her incredible influence on Scotland’s dance scene.

Kemono Lebe-Riot is a multidisciplinary artist working across hip-hop dance theatre, music, spoken word and community practice. His work explores lived experience, identity and everyday urban spaces, using movement, rhythm and storytelling to reflect the realities of working-class and Black communities.

Lebe: “Being supported by The Work Room through the Rosina Bonsu Bursary means a lot to me at this stage in my journey. It gives me the time and space to develop my practice more deeply and to begin shaping ideas that come directly from my lived experience.”

Project X: "We are thrilled that Kemono Lebe-Riot is recipient of Rosina Bonsu award. Lebe's artistry is multidisciplinary across dance, theatre and music, through his pioneering of championing Krump and Street Dance in Scotland, alongside his longstanding work in mentoring early career artists and teaching (all ages), through to performing and his collectively driven leadership. Lebe has contributed greatly to so many artists, and we're excited that now, he can have more time and space within his practice to experiment and explore. And, we just love this idea of a new work being inspired by the many lives and experiences that intertwine at bus stops."

The Rosina Bonsu Bursary supports a Scotland-based dance artist from the African/Caribbean diaspora. It aims to provide paid time, financial and practical support at a critical stage of their career, enabling them to refresh practice and instigate their own creative project over the next 6 months.

To kick start this, Lebe is spending this week at the Let’s Dance International Frontiers Festival in Leicester, produced by @serendipityinstituteuk .

🗣 We are pleased to introduce our first Embedded Artists: @gailsneddonchoreographer and @melebroomes ! ✨

We look forward to working with Gail and Mele, and the specific artistic perspectives they each bring through their practices, which are shaping dance in Scotland.

“I’m delighted to take on the role of Embedded Artist with The Work Room. I’ve been part of the membership since its early conception, and it’s been wonderful to watch how it has grown and continues to support dance artists across Scotland. As a dance artist based in the North East, my work is rooted in place, connection and care. Through this opportunity, I’m interested in how we gather and how we stay connected across a dispersed network, and how we create more sustainable and equitable conditions for artists to make work.” - Gail

“The Embedded Artist role means a lot to me. It’s my first time being on payroll, working in the creative industry, which has eased a lot of pressure and given me space to focus on my practice. I’m excited to hold space with members through movement and physical conditioning, supporting strength, energy, and wellbeing within our practices. I really value time spent in embodied practice, and sharing what I can. It feels like a real privilege.” - Mele

This new programme has been made possible through funding from the @paulhamlynfoundation Arts Fund, to build The Work Room’s organisational capacity towards supporting and influencing a more equitable dance sector in Scotland. These roles are offered as flexible contracts of employment for the equivalent of 2 days a week for one year.

We will be opening recruitment for the next two #EmbeddedArtists in Autumn 2026, for posts running January – December 2027.

Rhea Lewis is a creative producer, based in Glasgow, working interdisciplinary across dance, theatre and live performance, collaborating with artists and communities to create ambitious productions and space for their voices to be amplified in their own terms. Rhea is a Jamaican Scottish Black biracial woman and is interested in how culture can be used to heal, as spaces and sites for reconciliation, as well as encouraging critical thought and creativity.

Working in consultation & advocacy, Rhea contributes to decolonial & intersectional feminist change in the arts in Scotland. She has facilitated consultation advocacy sessions with the Scottish Government Cultural Strategy as well as the Theatre for Young Audiences Anti-Racism Working Group.

Previously, she has worked and produced for a range of independent dance and theatre companies, and festivals including: National Theatre of Scotland, European Championships Festival 2018, Glasgow Life, Tramway, The Work Room, A Moment’s Peace Theatre Company, The Arches, Africa in Motion Film Festival, Ankur Productions, Stillmotion, Glasgow Museums, Untitled Projects, and Stellar Quines Theatre Company.

Lewis is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of Project X Dance CIC, an organisation that champions dance and performance of the African Caribbean Diaspora in Scotland, producing with independent artists including Mele Broomes and new company Monqiux ensemble.

Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year is an exciting initiative led by Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage. Each day will showcase a different woman, whose story has shaped Black British or global Diasporic history; many of whom remain overlooked or under-celebrated in mainstream narratives. This will take the form of a rolling programme of short films, released throughout the year to keep these stories in daily circulation and to create an evolving constellation of leadership, resistance, artistry and enduring impact.

We’re very excited to share the first of three commissioned reflections on conversations had during our inaugural Jali Film Weekender last year ✨

By writer Eilidh Akilade (@eilidhakilade_), the first piece centres the vital discussion that took place on 31 October at @filmhouse_edinburgh on why and how we build space for Black, African and diaspora audiences in Scotland — beautifully unpacking what was shared, felt and learned on the day.

From representation to access, the conversation laid groundwork for how we can continue to grow more welcoming, more intentional and more community-led cultural spaces here in Scotland.

The #RosinaBonsu Bursary is back for 2026! 🌟

In honour of Rosina Bonsu and her incredible influence on Scotland’s dance scene, @project_x_dance and @the_work_room_dance are partnering again to deliver the Award to support a Scotland-based based choreographer/dance artist* from the African/Caribbean diaspora with:

▪️An artist fee of £6000 (based 30 days of the artists' time over the 6 month period)

▪️A project budget of £1500 towards the costs of developing your own creative project with collaborators

▪️Up to 2 weeks of studio time in The Work Room studio between July – September 2026

▪️A funded research trip to Let’s Dance International Frontiers in Leicester, UK (6 – 8 May 2026)

▪️A professional development budget of £200 to access additional training and development opportunities.

🗓 Application deadline: Monday 16 March, Midnight.

The bursary is aimed at supporting an artist at a transitional point in their practice, which might mean a move from early-mid career, a shift into a new professional or artistic context, returning to, or reorganising practice around new life circumstances or the opportunity to deepen practice or collaborations over a sustained period of time.

*We welcome applications from artists working in all areas of dance, including but not limited to choreography, performance, community, and teaching practice and may have come through a range of different training routes. All dance styles are welcome.

Rosina was an inspiring dance artist, choreographer, and educator who generously nurtured and encouraged dance artists of all ages throughout her career. 👑👏🏾
