Making of Fieldnotes: Chapter 1

Now open at @concordialib till January 7, 2027

Open for all, visit 2nd floor of Webster Library.

📅 October 23 – January 7
📍 Webster Library LB-2 vitrines, display cases, and Discovery Counter

Making unfolded between fieldwork moments, shaped by encounters with weavers, shepherds, spinners, and the interconnected lives of people, animals, and landscapes across the Thar Desert.

Collaborating with my mother, Jamna, to untwist machine-twisted pre-consumer waste brought stories of my grandmother Anchi Devi, a farmer and handspinner, and my aunt Chukiya’s textile practices, reminding me of our deep connections with land and all forms of life.

Fieldnotes: Chapter 1

Untwist, roll, spin, twist, twist,
weave, weave, weave, repeat.
Weave, weave, untwist, weave,
return, weave, open, roll,
spin, untwist, repeat.

Fieldnotes: Chapter 1 is an exhibition that emerges from Pramila Choudhary's fieldwork in the Thar Desert, western Rajasthan, India, where she engaged with Pattu weavers and explored the material practices, motifs, and embodied knowledge embedded in this hand-spun and handwoven wool textile tradition.
—
Born in India, Pramila Choudhary lives and works in Montréal, Canada. She is a textile artist, designer, educator, and PhD candidate in Geography, Urban and Environmental Studies at Concordia University, where her research-creation practice explores textile traditions, material culture, and sustainability. She studied Textile and Industrial Design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, India, and at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), Switzerland. Her current research focuses on Pattu, a hand-spun and handwoven wool textile tradition of Rajasthan, north-west India, where she has developed her research into hand-spinning and hand-weaving techniques through fieldwork and artistic experimentation.

Thanks to @helene.b @johnlatourart for seamless installation experience.

@rachelmachenry Who have patiently listened throughout this nine-month journey and guided me in visualising my ongoing research-creation inquiry

It’s a wrap, thank you everyone for inspiring and engaging session.

Despite Yellow warning of rain on 13th October 2026 at Montreal. We had a great start of @uaacaauc conference @concordiauniversity , our panel we had a full house and engaging conversation on :

Acts of Mending: Material, Social and Political Repair | UAAC/AAUC Conference 2026
How can mending move beyond materials to help us think about care, relationships, community, and social and environmental repair?

I had pleasure of co-chairing this panel with @torimacbeath Victoria MacBeath (Tori) at Concordia University, bringing together four thoughtful presentations that approached repair from different perspectives.
This conversation also extends our ongoing collaboration through the Moving Mending Circle (MMC), which Tori and I co-host with @fer____su as a space for collective stitching, shared learning, conversation, and connection. It was wonderful to bring some of these questions from our shared making practice into a wider space of dialogue and exchange.

Clara Congdon explored transformation, materiality, slowness, and labour through Scrap Paper: Remaking the Unmendable

Luka Stojanovic brought together chronic illness, embodied knowledge, and mending as a crip praxis.

L. Rebeca Esquivel considered how material repair in education can respond to environmental and social challenges.

Müveddet Al-Katib explored sohbet (conversation), craft, migration, and diasporic belonging as practices of connection and repair.

Together, these presentations invited us to think of mending not simply as fixing what is broken, but as a way of knowing, learning, caring, and building relationships across materials and communities.

Grateful to Tori, all the presenters, and everyone who joined us for this rich exchange. From stitching together in a circle to thinking together in a panel, may the practice of mending continue to connect us and open up possibilities for different futures. ❤️🧵

Art and artists I met in 2026.
Montreal, Canada. ✨

This was the spotlight event and one of my final curations as part of the Concordia Public Scholars Program (2025–26).

One of the greatest joys of this journey was bringing together the friends, artists, makers, and community I have had the privilege to build throughout my PhD. Seeing everyone gather in one space to share, create, and celebrate made this event truly special.

I am deeply grateful for the love, generosity, and joy that surrounded this program. Here’s to the friendships we built during my Public Scholar journey, and to the many more collaborations and connections that will continue beyond it. ❤️

Crafting Commons: Material | Making | Meditate ✨
What an inspiring day of conversations, creativity, and community at Concordia's Fourth Space. Bringing together artists, designers, researchers, educators, and craft practitioners from Canada, India, and the UK, we explored how making can become a space for dialogue, sustainability, care, and collective learning.

It was an honour to organize and co-moderate this symposium with fellow PhD scholar @meghachauhanm alongside an incredible panel featuring Sowparnika Balaswaminathan, @madan4meena, @rachelmachenry @studio_juhi, @kathleen.sheila.vaughan, @pragya57 @atelierb_amarie, @tuliatella (Amruthalakshmi Rajagopalan), @nadia.bunyan (@growing.arc ) Megha Chauhan, and Pramila Choudhary.

Thank you to our workshop facilitators, exhibiting artists, collaborators, and everyone who joined us. Your generosity, insights, and creative practices made this gathering truly special.
Craft reminds us that materials carry memory, making builds relationships, and commons are created through care.
Grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible. 💛

We couldn’t celebrate our 10th birthday without involving the part of the community at the heart of what we do: the aunties.

Our venue will be more stacked than ever with art, vendors, DJs, and genuinely amazing people. Bring your friends, your clothes, and your favourite summer fit, and come celebrate everything we stand for: community, solidarity, and most importantly, a good time. 🧱
