Yuval Taylor is the author of the wonderfully rich @Zora and Langston: A Story of Friendship and Betrayal” and l am thrilled for the conversation at @seminarycoopbookstores in #Chicago next Friday June 26. Funny thing is l worked for the bookstore about 10,000 years ago as a graduate student.

Yes, the stars have aligned on Langston’s 125th birthday and the 100th anniversary of BHM which cross paths with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence….

Yesterday, we got word we lost another literary giant, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. His extensive works of fiction, drama, critical essays, and monographs have left an indelible mark on the world’s literary and political landscapes. Many of us have found solace, inspiration, and guidance in his profound writings. Numerous quotes from his works have informed and guided us through our own writings, political actions, and meditations. Today, I am reminded of the poignant lines from his novel Devil on the Cross (1980), which resonate not only with the past but also with the current struggles we face in the academic, local, national, and global spheres.

“Our lives are a battlefield on which is fought a continuous war between the forces that are pledged to confirm our humanity and those determined to dismantle it; those who strive to build a protective wall around it, and those who wish to pull it down; those who seek to mold it, and those committed to breaking it up; those whose aim is to open our eyes, to make us see the light and look to tomorrow […] and those who wish to lull us into closing our eyes.”

Some of you might recall Ngũgĩ’s visit to campus in 1999 for a Mid-America Alliance for African Studies (MAAAS) conference. Although I wasn’t present, we are fortunate to have recordings of his lecture and a partial video conversation facilitated by our former colleague Byron Santangelo. If you have some time, please take a moment to watch both videos, which are available on our YouTube channel.

Too many giants are passing!
