Architecture and Urban Design (Projective Cities) Taught MPhil (18 months)

The Taught MPhil in Architecture and Urban Design (Projective Cities) is a research and design programme that examines questions at the intersection of architecture, urban design and planning. Student projects combine design with traditional forms of research, while challenging disciplinary boundaries and contributing to emerging spatial design practice and knowledge. The programme recognises the need for multidisciplinary understanding and new design research training to meet the demands of contemporary architectural and urban practice.

Each cohort addresses a shared theme which they take as the starting point for individual research agendas. The current theme is the Architecture of Collective Living. The ambition of this agenda is to use comparative analysis to investigate the different organisational, formal, programmatic and material structures that govern how we live together, and to develop new design proposals in response to these investigations; doing so will enable us to understand specific architectures and the broader political and social discourses that define them.

The minimum entry requirement for the Projective Cities) Taught MPhil programme is:  A four or five-year degree (BArch/Diploma/Masters equivalent) in architecture or other relevant disciplines, such as urban design, planning, urbanism, and landscape design. *Students seeking bursary funding from the AA must apply to the programme by the early application deadline in January and indicate on the application form that they would like to apply for financial assistance.

Inhabitable Interface: Railway Terminals on the Periphery of Central London

Project by Shoushu Chen, Projective Cities Taught MPhil (2024–25)

Project Description by Shoushu Chen:

The project investigates the civic potential of railway terminals along the northern arc of London’s Circle Line - Euston, Paddington, and King’s Cross - revealing how these sites evolved from functional infrastructure into spaces of urban inhabitation. Initially defined by typologies such as platforms, sheds, and porticos, these terminals gradually acquired a civic dimension, accommodating waiting, meeting and dwelling.

Drawing on the Latin term “civis” (citizen), the study reinterprets civic-ness not as a fixed form, but as an evolving spatial condition. Through drawing-led analysis, it explores how the terminals can act as a civic typology mediating transit and dwelling.

At Euston, the project examines early spatial forms and their symbolic apex in the Great Hall. Paddington reflects a shift toward hospitality infrastructure and the challenges of privatized civic space. King’s Cross presents an urban condition where terminal and district form a network of informal hospitality-based inhabitation.

Design proposals reposition these terminals as agents of inclusive urban life - spaces where infrastructure meets the civic realm, enabling moments of connection, rest and shared presence in a transient city.

2 years ago, I completed my M.Phil dissertation at @aaschool @projectivecities — an investigation into subaltern identities, water and space. It received a distinction and a commendation from @thesahgb

This body of work was a culmination of thoughts and explorations beyond the official year of thesis writing, and the process still continues in new forms.

I’m excited to finally share excerpts from this book and other research obsessions I continue to develop. Stay tuned. 💧🪼📨

MPhil Dissertation 2024 • Territories of Travel in the Aegean Archipelago, Christos Smyrniotis

The Aegean Archipelago, a dispersed landscape dependent on mobility and delimited by its islands‘ isolated conditions, has been re-invented to perform and be performed as a leisure-scape. Constantly reshaped by desire, the development of the Aegean islands unveils how touristification manifests as a territorial process enacted in both imaginary and material realms.

Territories of Travel examines the evolution of the Cyclades into a specialised constellation of travel sites.

Operating to make the imaginary experienceable, mass tourism has reciprocally shaped the islands‘ spaces, hosts and guests, forming the territory host. Focusing on spatial developments in the exemplary case of Mykonos island, the research dissects the tourist construction, uncovering its political and economic motives. An assemblage of institutional devices, immaterial lines, coastline conditions, attraction points, and programmed zones has framed insular landscapes and subjects as signs of a consumable experience.

Mediatised and commodified tourism spaces have formed a network of technical sites like ports, ruins, beaches, hotels and infrastructures to accommodate the travel rituals. Enacted through a functional choreography of movement, consumption practices and touristic reproduction, the island has been abstracted, disciplined and detached in order to be extracted semantically. materially and economically.

Dialogic Community Infrastructures will deepen the understanding of the city’s current problems and challenges derived from both contextual matters and historic claims. Organised around a number of daily topics (Introduction, models and governance, protocols of re-use, resilience, urban subjectivities), local guests from different profiles and backgrounds will enable a number of discussions focusing on the key topics of this years design studio: Transformation, Adaptation, Conversion.
