Zambia’s 73 Tribes: A Rich Cultural Heritage Worth Celebrating

By Austin Kaluba

Zambia is home to 73 officially recognised tribes, each contributing unique languages, traditions, ceremonies, beliefs, art, cuisine, and indigenous knowledge to the nation’s cultural identity.

From the Kuomboka, Nc’wala, Ukusefya Pa Ng’wena, Kazanga, Likumbi Lya Mize and Lwiindi ceremonies to the many indigenous languages and artistic traditions passed down through generations, Zambia’s diversity is a living heritage.

These traditions are more than cultural displays. They are living classrooms—preserving history, transmitting knowledge, strengthening communities, and reminding younger generations where they come from.

The story of Zambia’s 73 tribes is ultimately a story of unity without uniformity. As the nation continues to embrace “One Zambia, One Nation,” preserving its diverse cultural heritage remains essential to protecting its identity and future.

Likumbi Lya Mize: Honouring the Luvale Tradition 🎭

Likumbi Lya Mize is celebrated as the culmination of Mukanda — the initiation rite through which Luvale boys and girls pass into adulthood, guided by discipline, responsibility, and the values that define Luvale society. The ceremony honours this rite of passage and pays homage to the ancestors, marked by the appearance of the Makishi — masked dancers believed to embody ancestral spirits guiding each initiate through their transformation.

Elders use the occasion to pass down oral history and moral teaching, making it as much a living archive of Luvale knowledge as it is a celebration. The Likishi masquerade tradition has been recognised by UNESCO as an Artifact of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — a mark of its significance to Luvale identity and to humanity's shared cultural heritage.

Today, we honour this living heritage. 🙏🏾

Behind every mask, a spirit. Behind every dance, a lineage. 🎭
This is Likumbi Lya Mize — where the Luvale honour ancestors and welcome the next generation into adulthood.

The rhythm of gratitude. 🥁 At the Lubiinda Ntongo Ceremony, the Kaonde people of the Mumena Royal Establishment give thanks for the harvest and the hunt — dance, drum, and regalia carrying centuries of memory forward. This is the living heritage the Lusaka Biennale exists to honour.

The Crack in the Wall is opening.

May this month bring renewal, abundance and continued strength to our communities, our culture-bearers and our creative industries across Zambia and beyond.

WHERE THE WATERS BEGAN: CELEBRATING ZAMBIA'S RIVERS AND LAKES THAT GAVE BIRTH TO CIVILISATIONS
By Austin Kaluba

Long before roads, cities, and modern infrastructure, Zambia's rivers and lakes sustained life, shaped communities, and nurtured civilisation. Our ancestors understood a timeless truth: where there is water, there is life.

From the mighty Zambezi and Kafue Rivers to the Luangwa Valley, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Mweru, and Lake Bangweulu, these waters have provided food, fertile land, trade routes, and livelihoods for generations. They have also held deep spiritual significance, serving as sacred places of thanksgiving, prayer, renewal, and cultural identity.

Today, these remarkable waterways continue to support Zambia's people, economy, biodiversity, and energy production. They are not only natural resources but living repositories of history, indigenous knowledge, and cultural heritage.

As Zambia continues its development journey, protecting its rivers, lakes, and wetlands from pollution, deforestation, and climate change is both an environmental responsibility and a commitment to preserving the legacy of those who came before us.

The waters that gave birth to civilisation continue to nourish our future. By safeguarding them, we honour our ancestors and ensure that generations yet to come inherit the same gifts that have sustained Zambia for centuries.

HRH Chief MUMENA and Mumena Royal Establishment-MRE announce the upcoming Lusaka biennale 2028 (2028 – 2036 | "The Crack in the Wall")

"A people without culture is a people without a future."

Today, we officially unveil the Lusaka Biennale, Zambia's new national institution for arts, heritage and living traditions.

Unlike a conventional biennale, this is a 10-year decolonial journey: five editions, running 2028–2036, preceded by a 24-month preparation phase starting in 2026.

This is not a festival. It is permanent legacy infrastructure, that includes the creation of provincial living archives, healing gardens, cultural centers, museums confronting the history of colonialism, an Institute for African Knowledge, and a national artistic residency network, built across all 10 of Zambia's provinces before culminating in Lusaka.

The journey activates iconic sites: Victoria Falls, Kalambo Falls, Mwela Rock Paintings, Ing'ombe Ilede, the Livingstone Museum and beyond.

We are proud to announce the major founding partner the Mumena Royal Establishment.

This is Africa’s time to tell its own stories on its own terms.
