"I feel like you gotta have a side hustle to be able to survive out here in Hawaiʻi," says Angela Kaina, owner of Mauna i Kai Designs.
She's not alone. Across the islands, entrepreneurs are turning their passions into profit at craft fairs, farmers markets, and pop-up events, creating businesses that help them cope with Hawaiʻi's steep cost of living.

From Kori Lau's 40-year jewelry business to Ivan and Debra Kung's Tasty Jerky Hawaii (now in Foodland, Don Quijote, and 7-Eleven), these vendors put in countless hours creating inventory, perfecting booth setups, and building connections with customers. Many work full time jobs during the day and prep products late into the night.

What sets Hawaiʻi's vendor community apart? The spirit of camaraderie. Veterans mentor newcomers, vendors support each other through challenges, and everyone celebrates when someone lands a retail opportunity.

As Rella Dwiggins of Island Craft Fairs and Events puts it: "If I can showcase these small business owners, and a vendor gains a new shopper, then I did my job."

Aloha Island Craft Fairs Ohana! Join us this Saturday for Mahalo I Kau Kumu Holiday Gift Fair and School Supply Drive For Teachers!

We are just about halfway through the school year, and most parents already know that the supplies from the beginning of the school year have most likely started to deplete. Hawaii's educators are severely underpaid and often have to dip into their own pockets to create wonderful experiences for our keiki!

Donate unused and unopened school supplies, rubber slippers, hand sanitizer, blank t-shirts, backpacks, and sports gear at the Island Craft Fairs tent at Center Stage, and fill out an entry blank for your chance to win a Visa Gift Card!
