Shubho Bijoya & Happy Dussehra 🙏🏽🌺✨

Durga Puja is one of our biggest annual celebrations. It honors the goddess Durga Ma 🔱 and her victory over the demon Mahishasur, the triumph of good over evil. The 10-day festival ends today on Vijaya Dashami, which many Indians celebrate as Dussehra around the globe.

Kolkata Bengalis celebrate it a bit uniquely tho. Durga Pujo isn’t only about praying to a distant goddess on a pedestal. We see her as our homegirl, coming back to her parents’ house for a few days with her four kids in tow. So the pujo is a real vacay, with a strict no diet policy: khichuri bhog, maach (fish), mangsho (meat), & more mishti than we’ll ever admit. Today she goes back, and we send her off with sweets, a few tears, and a promise: asche bochor abar hobe. “Let’s do it again next year.”

Beneath the dhak (drums), shankha (conch shell) and ulu (women’s trilling call), sounds that echo a war cry, pujo carries a timely message: we stand with every woman. If we can welcome a goddess home as a daughter, we owe that same care to every daughter already here. We bow to Ma’s strength while women everywhere still fight to feel safe, heard, and believed. Mahishasur lives on in every abuse of power we excuse, and every time we look away to keep the peace. Evil doesn’t end because we pray or tell women to “stay safe.” It ends when we speak up, show up, and refuse to stay quiet. It ends when monsters are brought to justice. So the truest tribute to Ma isn’t how big we celebrate. It’s how we protect the basic dignity and freedom of the women around us, long after the pandals come down.

These are some fave moments & fit-checks from pujos past / present in NYC: draping a sari (peak Bong girl core), showing up for anjali (our morning flower offering), and a pandal in Times Sq with chosen fam. Sana got her blessings + prasad “treats” too 🐾

Many of us are far from the people we love most. But something about the drums and the same aarti we’ve heard all our lives pulls everyone I love back to the same place.

I feel so lucky to have grown up with these traditions, and luckier still to keep them going.

Love & blessings from Sana & me 💛
