Feeling fully seen as myself: "Just that idea of liking the body that you're in." Actor and comedian Ken Hall (thekenhall) shares how improv enabled him to feel fully seen as himself and empowered his self-acceptance. Thank you for following along with our @access.fest 2026 coverage! Transcript: Ken: Growing up, I was self-conscious of my height and my back. And as an actor, those are the very things that make me interesting and unique. It’s not all of me, but it’s a part of me, and those qualities of myself that I used to feel bad about or kind of embarrassed or even ashamed, that’s my moneymaker in a big way. Based out of Toronto. My pronouns are he, him. I am four foot seven and three quarters. I have major scoliosis, which is the curvature of the spine. I am wearing sort of a white, kind of flowery type of shirt. I’ve got a blue baseball cap, Blue Jays, Go Jays, and I’m wearing black shorts right now. Can I think of a moment where I was fully seen as myself? I know I keep mentioning improv, but I got to say improv really for me was the starting point for me to accept myself. I’ve had an amazing career in film and TV, not just as a comedian, but getting to utilize the body that I was born in. Again, just that idea of liking the body that you’re in. At @access.fest 2026, Stephanie Cadieux (@stephanie_cadieux) shares her perspective that while public spaces have become more accessible in Canada, there's more work to be done to make homes more accessible to disabled family and friends. Follow along for more coverage from AccessFest 2026! Transcript: Stephanie: Most of our lives, a lot of our lives in our homes and in the homes of our friends and family. I would say though, in Canada we do a pretty good job of making sure that our public spaces work for everyone. Not necessarily perfectly, but pretty good. Pretty comfortable. They’ve tried. Transcript: Adam: Belonging to me means, just sorta feeling like I’m part of a team and I’m part of the community. Basically using my skills and knowledge to help out with the community. "Without my work, I really didn’t have a place in the world." At @access.fest 2026, Azad Najfi explains how his work as a Deaf interpreter helps him feel belonging and pride. Stay tuned for more AccessFest coverage! Transcript: Azad: Really, when I feel recognized is when people recognize me for their work, for my work, excuse the interpreter. Especially for me from the Deaf community. Because without my work, I really didn’t have a place in the world. So when I started working as a Deaf interpreter and Deaf performer, that’s when I was getting recognition for who I am today. And just like today’s event with AccessFest. Oh my gosh, just having the deaf community see, and the hearing community, alike to see what Deaf people can do and the possibilities that the Deaf community can achieve. "I feel belonging when I know the world has been made accessible for me." At @access.fest 2026, Julian Ortiz (@rican.with.music) shares what belonging means to him and how spaces can be made accessible with Deaf interpreters and even with tech innovation. I have hearing aids that I can speak to a hearing person, but I have my sign language so I can speak to a Deaf person. So I’m a part of both worlds. My name is Julian Ortiz, and my pronouns are he and him. I’m wearing a black shirt with ribbed blue jeans with some rips all the way down to my feet. I’ve got black hair shaved on the side. I have a full beard. I’ve got caramel skin with some tattoos. So for me, I know that a space has accommodated me, is I mean, of course, having interpreters available. My vision was having a vibrotactile vest. I’m not sure the exact name of it, but like a wearable tech that you can feel the vibration. And so that provides more accessibility to me. And I would feel fully connected to the space, especially in the music industry. But in general, just having interpreters. That’s a huge role for my accessibility. But not just hearing interpreters, but actually Deaf interpreters as well. So having the Deaf interpreters to accommodate the language access that I need on a deeper level. [synth sting logo]

Transcript: Dani: Shared experiences, shared, almost like shared culture. And I just felt entirely like belonging in that space. I think one of the really good times that I really felt  seen is the last time that I went to a market at The Disability Collective. I felt that I could see people within me, got to have really amazing conversations, got to talk to people, and it’s not necessarily like we were talking about disability, but just, shared experiences, shared, almost like shared culture. It means accepting other people irregardless of differences within that. And I really feel like belonging is something that we all need. I just finished teaching an improv workshop here at AccessFest, and I feel like finding improv for me 20 plus years ago was actually finding a sense of belonging. To be in a room with other people, strangers at the start, and to be able to lower my guard and to open up and to try to, put more of me out there and my personality. And within improv in particular, it is all about saying yes and accepting other people’s offers and ideas. And so for me, that became more of my default. And so for me, finding improv was a sense finding belonging with other people, but also affirming myself and feeling more comfortable in my own skin. [synth sting logo]

I mean, I feel lucky that when I’m out with my partner, I kind of have my own personal describer and someone that can understand. But I have that with my best friends, too, with people who really understand you and that access intimacy is there, that you don’t have to ask for accommodations. They just kind of know to describe things to me or to kind of guide me whenever I need it. That’s when I feel most understood, is with my, my closest friends. This is why I find AccessFest a much fun event to do. A celebration of people of all abilities. [synth sting logo]
