Today was a very hard day for me.
I went to work for the first time in 2 years.
On my drive in I passed your grave. My heart was racing in my chest as I remembered the very first time you took me to work with you. We chatted and laughed on the Jackie Robinson Parkway. I wore your shirt I really don’t know why. I just remembered I couldn’t find any of mine. I sat in the drivers seat and the guys loaded the machine in and I remembered the very last time we cleaned a carpet together. I cried uncontrollably. It didn’t seem real that you’re really gone away from me. I went to the location and we unloaded the van. I assessed and started to prep. Narcisse vacuumed, and Donovan removed the gums. I pre- treated the spots and high trafficked area. As I got ready to start we all looked at each other and Narcisse said no way boss not today. I felt the machine and it triggered a memory. I remembered how you taught me how to hold the wand comfortably so I wouldn’t hurt my back. How to agitate all the spots and make a dirty carpet look like it’s new. The technique of cleaning baseboards safely. You taught me about different carpet fibers and how best to clean them. How to trim the raw edges and how to stretch and make the edges seamless so you can’t see where they begin or end. I became overwhelmed because we were a team but this time the team did not include you. I went to get lunch then I bumped into your barber. We shared a laugh at your memory. Later I saw yet another friend and I got to laugh again as we spoke about your generosity and love. Care taker for the job came over as he told me about the time your snow plow couldn’t fit the narrow parking lot and you saw some guys walking by and you told them to come help you and they did without hesitation. He was shocked as he had tried for years to get them to lend a hand. He said you were special I told him I knew. He said it’s gonna get harder before it gets easier and I should keep on being strong. We completed the job and as usual you would have been proud. I love you my darling and while sleep is yet again delayed prohibiting my ability to see you in my dream. I will listen to prayerful music to soothe me.
