Local elections matter. These are the decisions that impact our communities. Shame on the Smithfield High School Board for this policy change that will put vulnerable students at risk. This will, no doubt, be challenged in court as unlawful but that will not prevent the harm caused. We protect us. Vote early! #protecttranskids #transisbeautiful #trans

WE WON 🎉🥳🙌🏻🍾 Thanks to your support, our community is safer, and we are one step further to statewide decriminalization! Our policy order provides resources to LGBTQ+ youth and s-x workers, and peace of mind when reporting violence. This is only the beginning. When we fight, we win!

Thank you so much to our lead sponsor @votejivan and our cosponsors @marcgov @pattynolan1 @mayorsiddiqui @ayahaalzubi. Thanks also to @cathie.zusy & @e_denisesimmons for voting in favor. It passed with 8 votes yes and 1 abstention.

Throughout Boston's historic first march for s-x worker pride, as well as in conversations after, workers emphasized the lived experience of earning their living under criminalization from both the state and the public:

"If you would rather judge someone for s-x work than pay them a livable wage, then what else do you expect us to do? I work three to four jobs on top of s-x work, and that is barely keeping me afloat."

"S-x workers helped start Pride. S-x workers are the canaries in the coal mine for how people are treated."

"All forms of work are selling your mind or body through means of labor, so why is it different in this context? If you have ever watched or rented porn, visited a strip club or advocated for women/queer rights, that means you support s-x work, whether you realize it or not."

Advocates for full s-x work decriminalization actively see the Nordic Model as a dangerous misstep that is more likely to harm the livelihood of s-x workers. S-x workers experience higher levels of violence within the Nordic Model because clients are less likely to provide their personal information for screening purposes and more likely to want to meet in hidden, discreet locations. Dr. Niina Vuolajärvi's research from the London School of Economics reports that a resounding majority of s-x workers she interviewed - 96%, to be exact - felt that Nordic Model legislation put them in more harm both from clients and the police. The resulting difficulty to find clients also causes greater impoverishment for s-x workers. According to the Global Network of S-x Work Projects (NSWP), the Nordic Model has failed to achieve its intended goal of decreasing incidences of s-x work. The burden of the Nordic Model therefore falls heavily on the s-x workers it claims to protect, not just the buyers legislation targets.

Organizations such as the ACLU and Human Rights Watch have advocated for full decriminalization of s-x work.
