Philadelphia keeps paying millions to burn its trash in Chester as Mayor Cherelle Parker renews the city’s deal with Reworld. Reworld’s PAC donated to Parker’s political committee as the company lobbied to protect those contracts which were threatened by citizens speaking out and against the pollution.

Pollution doesn’t respect city lines. It travels. The same pollution that burdens Chester contributes to the climate crisis that’s bringing more dangerous heat and flooding to Philadelphia!

Who benefits when public money keeps flowing to polluters? It isn’t the people breathing the air.

Follow the money - it’s leaving behind a trail of blood at this point

Today for Fourth of July in Philadelphia, hundreds of veterans came from all over the country, joined by unions and community members, to protest against Trump's war in Iran and the endless funneling of money towards ICE and war, instead of healthcare and schools. We talked to veterans about why they were out protesting today ✊

The Department of War budget surpassed $1.5 trillion in the past year, and Trump has personally made billions off of his second term. The biggest blow to Trump was the January 23 general strike in Minneapolis against ICE, not the Democrats or the courts. We need more protests, occupations, and strikes against Trump's bloody imperialist wars abroad and at home.

On Wednesday, we shut down Broad and Market streets at City Hall for three hours in the pouring rain to Make Philly Affordable. We wore our rec center costumes, gave out our demands to commuters and passersby, and brought traffic to a halt because these demands are URGENT. We need to get where we’re going, but more than that—we need IMMEDIATE funding for food, housing, schools, rec centers, libraries, SEPTA, and renewable energy.

We shut down the road to say: we need this budget surplus. TODAY is the rainy day.

The following day, Erica ended her 21 day hunger strike as City Council passed a budget in which everyone lost.

But WE WON! We got the Mayor to meet with us and commit to working with us in the future. We got signed pledges from Councilmembers Landeau, O’Rourke, Gauthier, and Brooks. We got a letter of support from Party Leader Gilmore-Richardson, and we’re teaming up on a working group for green jobs with Council President Johnson.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE’VE GOT US! Y’all are eager to jump in—to train in and commit to joining us in nonviolent direct action for a more affordable city, in the spirit of Rosa Parks and Dr. King.

On day 21 of hunger strike to Make Philly Affordable, we took to the road to let Mayor Parker and City Council know that we’ll keep disrupting the status quo until they fund food, housing, schools, rec centers, libraries, SEPTA, and renewable energy. We blocked Broad St. at City Hall for three hours before police arrested Joaquin and Erica. They’ve both since been released with all charges dropped.

See y’all at 5pm today on the north side of City Hall.

URGENT: Once the capital of this nation and the keystone upon which so much of American industry was built, Philadelphia has been reduced to a shadow of its former self.

Today, our economy is increasingly propped up by spectacles and celebrations like the FIFA World Cup, the 250th anniversary and whatever glitter billionaires will throw at it to distract from the growing cracks beneath our feet.

The people of this city should no longer tolerate a government that extracts from us, lies to us, and then abuses us so casually for asking the right questions.

Mayor Parker, your time in city leadership is coming to an end. You have failed this city, just as Kenney failed it before you and just as Nutter failed it before him.

The least you could do is grant us the courtesy of being left alone during the final year of your administration like the others did.

Sunrise Movement asks that you stand with them at City Hall tomorrow at 5pm. Hmph.

Arresting a hunger striker is what Mayor Parker’s budget is going to, while Philadelphians can’t pay their bills. MAYOR PARKER, IT IS YOUR JOB TO MAKE PHILLY AFFORDABLE, and we will KEEP SHOWING UP until you do.

COME OUT TOMORROW at 5pm on the north side of City Hall - the budget may be being passed tomorrow but THIS ISN’T OVER.

Day 20, UTOPIA🌈. In this budget, the Parker administration funds police instead of people. So today we set up the world we’re building - where all of our public services are fully funded and running on renewable energy.

Day 19. Join us tomorrow for a taste of the world we’re building—✨🌻🌈UTOPIA🌈🌻✨ on the north side off City Hall from 12-7pm. A world where our needs are met: we all have fully funded FOOD, HOUSING, SCHOOLS, REC CENTERS, LIBRARIES, SEPTA, AND RENEWABLE ENERGY.

The hunger strike is ongoing, the Mayor did not provide the letter she promised today. We will go back for it tomorrow. The budget is signed into law on Thursday, and we need the following:
1) the letter from Mayor Parker
2) City Council’s signing of our pledge
3) a task force for Make Philly Affordable, which will provide dedicated, repeated staff time to meeting these demands.

is this the city culture you’re willing to accept? this city is falling apart and it is absolutely visible for you to see in full display. Pride had less funding, less support and less soul because much like other city services and events, you can bet that those funds are going to the POLICE.

People report widespread abuse and harassment by the PPD, as well as being baracading, kettled and blocked from leaving the gayborhood. Verbal abuse from officers recorded as well.
The night was ended with police on horses chasing people through residential areas and shutting down entire city blocks. If you have any of this please send it to me for further investigation.

DAY 18 WAS A HUGE SUCCESS. We trained in civil disobedience then took to the road to demonstrate our commitment to showing up and disrupting until these demands are met 🫡 shoutout to our trainees, y’all are so powerful ❤️‍🔥

Today we’ll be back at City Hall to follow up with Council and the Mayor about their commitments to the Make Philly Affordable demands. The budget is signed into law on June 11, and we’ll keep showing up, because we need FOOD, HOUSING, SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, REC CENTERS, SEPTA AND RENEWABLE ENERGY.
