John took part in the Soundstage of Hope Benefit Gala and Concert this past Saturday, held at the Chaplin Recording Studios in Los Angeles, CA. The event was hosted by Dave Grohl and benefits homeless service providers Hope the Mission and Los Angeles Mission.
For the concert, John joined Dave, Chad Smith, and Chevy Metal to play a rendition of Van Halen’s “You Really Got Me”. For it, he used his custom-made purple Music Man/Ernie Ball Axis, made as an exact replica of the guitar Eddie Van Halen had on the cover of a 1991 Guitar World Magazine cover. Back in 2014, John asked Ernie Ball/Music Man to build an exact replica of the guitar, and they went one step further by using original parts from 1991 stored away and included a “JCM” monogram in the headstock. This is the first time we see him using the guitar at all!
His amp was a 1965 Marshall JTM45 MkII Plexi into a Mojotone 2x12” cabinet.
As for pedals, he mixed it up for the occasion:
- Boss TU-3
- unidentified pedal, maybe Katana but it’s blurry?
- Klon Centaur
- Ibanez TS10
- Mesa Boogie Flux Five
- MXR EVH Phase 90
- Boss BF-2 Flanger
- Providence Chrono DLY-4
- Strymon Flint
- 29 Pedals OAMP

He also played “Sweet Dreams” with Annie Lennox, Dave Grohl, Wendy Melvoin and Greg Kurstin. He used a Martin acoustic guitar, which isn’t an OM-28JM or an OMJM. Kinda resembles a D-45 but looks smaller? Probably an OM-42.
For the acoustic, he had a small pedalboard with a Boss CE-2, Boss DM-101 and a Sarno Black Box
