You are never really ready to have a kid.

I tell couples they're not ready — and they never will be, until the baby is here. I hear two plans: live it up first, then have kids; or have kids now so you can live it up after they leave. Both treat kids as the interruption.

How do you show you are willing to compromise and negotiate in your relationship?

When Yowei got her dream job in another state, he knew he couldn't move with her, but he did everything he could to support the growing relationship. He got a new place that would be a sanctuary when she returned on weekends. He cooked her delicious meals she could melt into when she got off the train. And he walked her back to the train at 5am on Mondays.

What big and small things do you do for your partner to show them you love and support them?

It would have been so much easier to walk away.

Yowei can name the moment. Kyle's ex was crossing boundaries. Walking away would have been easier. Staying, and working through something that annoyed her, is how she knew this was it.

What's the hard thing you'd only stay for if you were already in?

Who holds the worry in your relationship?

Yowei was spinning on kids, a new show, and whether the bills would get paid. She asked Kyle to worry more in front of her so she didn't have to carry it for both of them. He does — and she still has to remind him.

What would change if your partner let you see them carrying some of the load?

What's the work in your house that never made it onto a negotiation list?

Yowei used to pretend she cooked. When the DC commute left her too tired to grocery shop or make a meal, Kyle just started cooking. They never talked about it. He stepped up, and she noticed.

End of summer means fomo vacations, last minute road trips, beach lounging, languid long walks, perhaps train & airports delays (😬)so that means ALOT of downtime to catch up on some PODS!

Luckily @tribecaaudio got you covered! Most of the festival selects are premieres so often that means waiting (in anti-ti-cii-paaattion) for a future release date (though some are out by now)! BUT in honor of @tribeca’s 25th anniversary @davygardner and team curated two showcases of READY to binge shows that have made a mark on the scene! YO what is that sick @iraglass vocal chain? As I’ve learned over the years (the hard way), audio for podcast and broadcast is kind of the OPPOSITE of audio for music. With music you are trying to sweeten the sound with all kinds of saturation, coloration, eq, room sound, reverb, etc. These are all things that we hear as musical! Yes, a fairchild was originally intended as a broadcast compressor, but if you listen to old broadcasts, things sound boxy, and saturated. Again, cool for a specific sound of music, but what we’re going for is something as clean and clear as possible, we want the Voice Over to sound like someone is sitting right next to you.

Over the years Yowei has let me convince her to upgrade her home recording set up. Instead of a blanket over her head, we got the Whisper Room, instead of using a cheap USB or condensor mic, we got a Neumann TLM 170. Instead of a Focusrite Scarlett, we got a Neve 88m (thanks for the suggestion @bestsandwichever ). @izotopeinc makes all kinds of software that removes artifacts - P- Pops or Plosives, room reflections, noise, clicks, etc. BUT the less one HAS to use them, the better it ultimately sounds. Even with all of this gear, the sound treatment helped immensely - it removed some of the reflections that were comb filtering and clouding Yowei’s voice.

And yes, it’s a bummer that Chuck Surack (owner of sweetwater) donated to Republicans, but if anyone has any other idea about how to buy a bunch of gear to try it out, and then return the stuff you don’t want, I’m all ears! I’m still mourning the loss of Yuengling Lager for the same reason.
