It’s not easy to put into words what past weeks have meant. From the first brainstorming to the final delivery at the World Athletics Championships, it was a blast! Launching the first class of the World Athletics Media Academy was one of our goals for 2025—and every minute has been worth it.
We brought together 12 writers, 10 photographers, and 4 commentators - together 26 talents from 19 different countries - to offer them an incredible opportunity to cover the World Athletics Championship Tokyo25. Meeting them all for the first time in that opening session was pretty emotional, I have to admitt. And let’s not even talk about the goodbyes in the mixed zone… :)
None of this would have been possible without an incredible support of number of colleagues. My heartfelt thanks go to @zvailakis and @tani0710 for their support, and to the inspiring mentors - @riccardoromani, @martinmazur.media, @joelmarklund and Rob Walker - for their dedication and guidance. Grateful to all my World Athletics colleagues that took their time to give our students a backstage view: Luca Verraschina (competition), Paolo Emilio Adami (medical), Laura Arcoleo (digital media), Jessica Whittington and Jon Mulkeen (editors). Thanks for a nice talk with event ambassadors @sallypearson and @taylored2jump. And of course, Sony’s support for the photography program added immense value.
It was challenging. It was exhausting. But above all, it was inspiring. We opened doors to the world of athletics for a new generation of storytellers. And currently, I can’t wait to welcome the next class…

Immensely proud of this group of participants of the 2025 World Athletics Media Academy. Step by step, day by day they have improved their storytelling skills - in photography, journalism and commentating. Can’t wait to see you all at different venues over the world in the coming years.

Big shout out to @zvailakis, @markucerova and @tani0710 for making this happen, and to my fellow mentors @bobmartinphotography, @riccardoromani, @martinmazur.media and Rob Walker for their hard work and dedication.

Pictures from my coverage of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan to come in the following days.

Staff writer Patrick Diana argues that the ACC’s domination in the NCAA tournament further proves that Pitt should have made it into the field and the committee under-seeded the ACC as a whole.

The brisk, breezy air in Oakland simmered in the seconds before a horde of redheads bolted down Semple Street. The “Ginger Run” kicked off this year’s SempleFest on Saturday, with varying shades of red hair flapping through the wind as the runners sprinted down the street, flanked by a cheering audience dressed in green.
