It was fun to moderate a discussion with @psarthak19 on the book ‘Fiscal Fables’, co-authored by @pranaykotas

I believe everyone should read this book. It is richly laced with pop culture references and deals with where our taxes go and how the government spends them!

After having read it, I can say that, for me, public finances are no longer an intimidating subject!

Fiscal Fables: A Citizen’s Guide to Public Finance by Sarthak Pradhan and Pranay Kotasthane

A Simple Book on Indian Economy, Public Finance and Fiscal Budget of India

There is an unending debate on the north-south claims on government money. Every election cycle unmistakably sees a discussion on freebies and corruption. The states and the union continue to have multiple disagreements concerning the Goods and Services Tax. And while Indian cities contribute to the bulk of its GDP, they are perennially begging for money.

Discussions around the topics listed above are now commonplace, yet they often take place in the absence of a grasp on public finance concepts, even though this discipline provides a framework to understand the role of a government in the economy.

That’s where Fiscal Fables comes in. It demystifies India's public finances to a lay audience and explains public finance concepts with the help of relatable stories and examples, to make this vital knowledge accessible to a general interest reader.

Where is our tax money going?

Do you think you don’t have to worry about the govt. spending if you don’t pay income tax? Think again. Everyone, whether they are a taxpayer or not, pays to the govt. Therefore, if we want a secure future, we must be careful about where our money goes.

Listen to one of our most entertaining and enlightening episodes.

Join us for a conversation on Fiscal Fables with authors Pranay Kotasthane and Sarthak Pradhan, both Fellows at Takshashila, our neighbours right here in Bengaluru. GST fights, freebie debates, cities begging the centre for money, we argue about all of it without ever learning the grammar underneath. This book fixes that, one relatable story at a time.

Friday 25th September, 7pm. Goobe's Book Republic, Church Street.

सरकार क्या है: गब्बर या रॉबिनहुड? Myths in Public Finance and India's Economy

We discuss:
* Sarkaar Kya Hai? Gabbar ya Robinhood?
* Myths in Public Finance
* When is the interest rate too high?
* When is it ok for governments to take loans?
* Quality of spending
* We make programmes, not policy
* Corporate tax should be low
* Why are our cities run so badly?
* Top three reforms that India needs today

So glad that our book on public finance begins with the best-ever quote on taxation, by Terry Pratchett.

Sarthak Pradhan and Shobhankita Reddy write for @theprintindia on the tax burdens facing India's mining sector.

The industry's growth is constrained not only by high and cascading levies, but by complex regulatory delays and policy uncertainties. Establishing a GST-style Minerals Council and a stable, predictable tax architecture is essential for attracting investment and securing India's long-term mineral resilience.

A Fiscal Symptom, Decoded 📚

We love to argue about GST, about freebies, about who owes whom yet we perform this drama without the one thing that would let us understand it: the grammar of public finance itself. This is ideology at its purest. Not lies, but a gap in literacy that power depends on to keep functioning unwatched.

Fiscal Fables closes that gap, one relatable story at a time.

And here is the delicious local twist: both authors Sarthak Pradhan and Pranay Kotasthane teach at Takshashila - our neighbours, right here in Bengaluru, demystifying the state from just down the road.

Come to Goobe's. Understand the machine before you argue about it.
