In August 2025, wildfires burned 350,000 hectares across Spain. Architects @manuelbouzas_ , Laura Salazar & @psequero1 (@salazarsequeromedina ) won the ARCO Madrid exhibition commission not with a drawing but with a letter that told the jury that the most important art fair in southern Europe deserved a space of critique.

What they built was a fifty-meter wall of charred timber, six suspended veneer lamps backlit to glow like fire, and a material lifecycle that sent 99% of the wood back into production through FINSA’s recycling division. People walked up to the wall and stopped, not because of how it looked, but because of how it smelled. Burnt pine. Smoke. A Galician forest.

Architects Manuel Bouzas (@manuelbouzas_) and the Salazar Sequero Medina studio (@salazarsequeromedina) have transformed the Guest Lounge at the 45th edition of @feriaarco into an act of collective memory. Their proposal repurposes wood from the wildfires of summer 2025 into a living material—one that speaks of devastation while also suggesting the possibility of coming together.

Following the fires of 2025, which burned over 350,000 hectares in Galicia, the project reuses salvaged timber to create a spatial installation reflecting on loss and renewal. The design transforms destruction into a material resource, exploring the relationship between fire, landscape, and architecture.

LUMBRE is our project for @ad_spain stand at @feriaarco 2026, part of a dual installation mirrored at @massimodutti ’s Serrano flagship in Madrid. Built from 0.4 mm veneer peeled from logs burned in the August 2025 Galician wildfires, it forms a curvilinear wall that disrupts the fair’s white-box grid, opening an enigmatic threshold. Inside, works by artists Jacobo Castellanos and Sandra Mar extend the project’s narrative, engaging wood and fire as intertwined material and cultural forces.

Title: Platform Surfside: On-Tide / On-Time

Description: “In response to the alarming climate crisis that imposes extreme uncertainty, homeowners of Surfside must find an architectural solution that allows them to reside in their original places of dwelling. The proposal aims to wonder a potential vision for Surfside’s urban future, while simultaneously honoring and supporting the existing fabric and those who inhabit it.
On-Tide / On-Time is a proposal that preserves the existing infrastructure and architecture on site. Guided by parameters aimed to be low-cost, easily constructible, prefabricated, and readily accessible, homeowners retain the autonomy to live on their own timeline. Found within these parameters, our solution reveals an elevated lightweight structure expanding above the rear masses of the existing homes.”

Led by Professors Pablo Sequero (Syracuse Visiting Critic, partner at SalazarSequeroMedina) and Lily Chishan Wong (UM Assistant Professor, Syracuse Boghosian Fellow ’22–’23), our new Seaside Adaptations initiative brings Syracuse and U-SoA students together to tackle the pressing realities of climate change in Miami and New York.

This four-year collaboration, supported by Perkins&Will, connects shared studio work, public programming, and cross-city dialogue to explore architecture’s role in coastal resilience. By focusing on adaptive design within existing urban fabrics, the studios challenge students to imagine—and shape—collective, climate-secure coastal futures.

Special thanks to Dean Michael Speaks of Syracuse University and Dean Rodolphe el-Khoury of U-SoA for their continued support.
