🌽 PRITZKER, KEEP THE JOSLIN PLANT OPEN!

As Pritzker campaigns for re-election and postions himself for a 2028 presidential run, he’s made countless stops at farms across the state of Illinois. As reported this week by Reuters, Pritzker stopped at one farm in Shirley where he spoke of the difficulties farmers and agricultural workers are going through due to climate catastrophe and the illegal war on Iran: “Agriculture drives an enormous part of Illinois’ economy. We’ve got to do ‌all we can to weather the storm and get Washington to take a different course”

Pritzker doesn’t have to wait for Trump or Congress, though. He has the power to use eminent domain and reopen the former Tyson plant under public ownership. This election season, we call on Governor Pritzker to not just talk the talk but to turn his words into action.

@GovPritzker Save the Joslin Plant Now!

THIS WEEK AT DISSONANT WORKS

Thursday, October 15 at 8 PM

Playing in support are modern classical/drone composer Bret Schneider, Sounds Like Noise (Matt Derouin of Future/Modern’s ambient project), and the debut of drone artist highwaynoise from Springfield, IL.
$20/PWYC/donations

Friday, October 16 at 8 PM
A wonderful show of gentle, feeling folk music.
Ben Eisenberger, from Omaha, is coming to play songs on the harp. Enjoy the heartfelt, melancholy music he brings forth.
In support will be the glowing songs of Teshua Parker, the yearning, delicate lyrics and vocals of dee bird, and the plaintive, frank music of Mamo Shame.
$10/PWYC

Saturday, October 17 at 8 PM
Steve Hirsh (drums), Nathan Hanson (sax), and special last-minute addition Art Edmaiston (sax) are coming to play. This is heavy free jazz, the pure stuff, so get ready and get hip.
In support are the classic duo of Dave Stone (reeds) and Aaron Smith (piano), and a trio of George Matt Bowles (guitar), Alberto Patiño (drums), and Danny Pankratz (guitar).

Sunday, October 18
The Pruitt-Igoe Myth
Film screening and discussion presented by Brick City Forum.

Monday, October 19
Gong Slayer, STL Clarinet Freaktet, Michael Williams/Bob Ross, and Pankratz/Martinez/Lubart.
Gong Slayer, a mysterious entity from Albuquerque, finally descends upon St. Louis. Is this shadowy figure a familiar face? It has no face. It is a sheer wall of shimmer and hum. Open yourself to awe.
Also, the return of the STL Clarinet Freaktet. The lineup is shapeshifting, but all you really need to know is this: there will be clarinets, a lot of clarinets, buzzing, popping, and spluttering the whispers of infinity.
Guitar duo Michael Williams and Bob Ross blend their singular approaches to the instrument into something all their own.

Come out and support experimental music, film, and art at Dissonant Works.

Last month was a testament to how much capitalism has become a roadblock to a livable future 🛑🔥

You wouldn’t know that looking at the headlines, but the truth is that this isn’t just ‘unseasonably warm weather’. It is a direct result of a system predicated on endless expansion on a finite planet.

In PSL, we are fighting not just for the working class but for the planet itself and our right to live on it 🌏

The Midwest has been the heartland of labor organizing and struggle. Developing many great organizers one such organizer who has left their mark is Mother Jones

Mary Harris (Mother) Jones developed her persona from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire and began to organize union members in UMWA and Knights of Labor, along with the broader community.

She organized through a socialist frame work - to have union members backs as they fought for 8 hour work days and child labor laws during the height of the Gilded Age against capitalist robber barons. This made her in the billionaire elites' eyes “the most dangerous woman in America!”

Her legacy and impact is still reflected upon today in the struggle against those who would undercut workers' labor value.

✊🏿 For decades, the working class has faced the deindustrialization of major cities, the consolidation of major corporations into monopolies with vast resources at their disposal, and the continued rise in the cost of living while wages remain stagnant, or in some cases, lessen. The crises before the working class of climate change, AI and automation, and a rising cost of living due to endless war present enormous risks that require a renewed militancy of the labor movement. Where possible, conventional forms of struggle (e.g., strikes, marches, demonstrations) must be refined and supplemented by new methods of struggle, including the demand to seize, takeover, and operate closing plants.

Two months ago, it would have been inconceivable to demand the seizure of a closing plant. Today, the Joslin workers are proof that hundreds of nationally oppressed, working class people, side-by-side their neighbors and family members, are ready to fight to demand what is theirs.

Thank you to everyone who came out yesterday to say Hands Off Cuba! ¡Manos Fuera de Cuba! 🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺

Thank you to @saintlouiscpusa @pslstl and @communityliberationnetwork for endorsing and speaking at the event. It is crucial to show a united worker's front in the face of U.S. imperialism, a powerful but not undefeatable beast!

To our Cuban brothers and sisters - we stand with you, NOT the ghouls in D.C. that claim they represent us. We stand in solidarity with the proletarian masses, NOT the ruling class that profits off our suffering.

There is only one solution - a worldwide socialist revolution!
