I finished my Bachelor of Arts at Oberlin College with a major in Studio Art, and minors in Comparative American Studies and German ✨😝🧑🏼‍🎓💪🙏🏻🕺
Thank you to my family for making this possible. Thank you to my incredible professors who have encouraged me to be ambitious in pursuing the work that I’m passionate about making. And finally thank you to all of the friends who have been with me through some deeply challenging but growth-stimulating times, and who have uplifted me and made this place a home for me. Many of you important folks are not pictured here, and I want to assure you that you are in my heart❤️‍🔥

We are venturing into our very first banjo building project of the year this weekend in Sacramento! It’s going to be once again, a very historic occasion and it has us thinking about legacy and the people who have created paths for us and Black people of the future to walk closer to the ways of the earth and the folk knowledge of her people. Today I’m reflecting on the gratitude we have for structural artist and professor at Oberlin College in Ohio, Johnny Coleman @psnrice. It was through our work with the banjo that we were able to discover and honor his work, or rather, the banjo has opened many paths for us to connect deeper with culture bearers of this time such as Professor Coleman. He brought a really amazing instrument builder from the island of Jamaica @menziesinstruments to his class at @oberlincollege somewhere beyond a decade ago. Also shouting out the lineage even further to those who taught the teachers, so much gratitude in this post going back so far to the known & unknown. We met Paul Dennison in 2018 who had been present in that class & he and Joanne Pontrello @joannepontrello @saltwaterseeds have been supporting this project in moving forward with our instrument building, wood working voyages so much over the last three years. All this is dedicated to African heritage people who are creating our futures by being here now and building with our hands, hearts & minds and all those who have brought us here in a good way. Thank you to everyone who is supporting this journey to reroot in and rediscover our musical and cultural expressions. i’ve been woodcarving in a rly amazing class about Black vernacular art aka skills & traditions & visual languages passed down outside of institutions, rooted in community knowledge, oral history, maker culture, elders, hands, grain, storytelling. survivance. the shit capitalism doesn’t want us to have! & what adapting amidst the climate apocalypse requires (which by the way the apocalypse is here has been here and isn’t one thing that starts or ends, covid is part of the climate apocalypse) We gotta build a better future happy tuesday

What a day! I visited both Transformer Station and SPACES. Organized independently, the exhibitions at each location worked so well in tandem and I feel lucky to have seen them one right after the other. Together they framed the Black experience and point of view in new light. In New Histories, New Futures at TS, Antwoine Washington, Kambui Olujimi, and Johnny Coleman offered past, present, and future counternarratives to the persistent stories and imagery surrounding the Black existence. Through sight, sound, and smell, Coleman’s immersive installation gives voice to the nameless, faceless, and voiceless, slave women who escaped their Kentucky farm in 1853. Washington resists the stereotype of the absent Black father by painting portraits of his own young family. Two paintings, in a more naturalistic style, humanize his subjects while the bold color-blocked style of the other two lend a more universal effect to his project. Olujimi addresses the future of Blackness in his dreamscapes of “floating Black bodies ‘freed from the gravity of oppression.’” The otherworldly compositions suggest a time and place we have yet to achieve but might be possible.

At SPACES, Davon Brantley and Asmaa Walton take on "the canon" in their exhibitions Art History and Black Art Library, respectively. Using tropes of Renaissance and Baroque art, Brantley explores how trauma gives rise to certain behaviors and affects our relationships. Intermingled with Brantley’s work, which is applied directly to the wall and will be painted over at the conclusion of the exhibition, Walton displays her meticulously collected archive of material on Black culture including monographs and catalogue rainsonées of Black artists. Nastassja Swift, the artist-in-residence who dreamt up and executed the Cleveland Youth Parade on 8/28/21, lets us into her workspace and glimpse the process behind her event. Both performative and documentarian, the exhibition demonstrates the beauty and unity of a community.

It's the final weekend for a visit to the @transformerstation in Cleveland, OH where "New Histories, New Futures" features work created in residence by 2020 pilot artist Johnny Coleman (@psnrice). Johnny's sculpture, sound, and projection installation is in homage to the history of an enslaved family. For the past several years, Johnny has meticulously chosen sites and materials to bring this story to the public and shed light on its forgotten past.
