End of an era… Goodbye to FMH aka “Oldberger” aka Neuberger Hall, our HOME for our studio art classes since the 1960s. How many art students passed through your studios over these +/-65 years??? Thank you for your years of service to us. We will miss you, but we will still be neighbors! Look for us just two doors down the park in our beautiful new building

for those who might not be in Portland to see the installation in person, here is the video being projected at Sugar Cube Gallery now!

Artist Statement:
As a first-generation college student, my work explores identity, belonging, and the experience of being Mexican American in the United States. I am interested in how political systems, stereotypes, and cultural expectations shape the way we see ourselves and how others see us.
These two works are layered together, with one projected over the other to reveal what is often hidden. The imagery overlaps to show both the surface level and the deeper reality of what is happening in the world. This layering reflects the tension between what is presented publicly and what is actually lived.
One of the works draws from a well-known composition ( The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci) to examine political power and how leaders are often placed on a pedestal. It reflects my feelings during the election, when emotions felt overwhelming and uncertain. The use of red and blue represents constant division, while flags point to identity, migration, and the connection between countries, including my own Mexican heritage.
The second work focuses on lived experience. It speaks to the reality behind stereotypes and the struggle of not fully belonging to either side of my identity. It reflects what it feels like to live a normal life while being seen as something else, as a threat, when that is not the truth.
Together, these works speak to the experience of being Mexican American, the pressure to belong, and the importance of being seen and understood.

Wow! We are in for a real treat over the next few weeks because our newest exhibition showcases the mulitmedia work of @jun_art_t. The curators are working with some unforeseen supply chain delays that are keeping us from putting up a few finishing details. Stop by later this week or next week, in person, to see what we add to the space 👀👀👀
We will keep you updated here as well. thanks for looking!
Jun (b. 2004) is a mixed media artist based in Portland, Oregon. Their work engages with themes of identity, politics, and social justice, with a focus on the experiences of first-generation Mexican American communities.
Working across text, graphic design, video, and drawing, Jun creates layered compositions that reflect real-life events and personal narratives. Their practice is informed by lived experience and addresses issues such as language, immigration, and the realities of the “American Dream” for people of color in the United States.
Recent work has explored the impact of immigration enforcement and systemic inequities on families and communities, emphasizing both personal and collective perspectives. Through visual storytelling, Tellez seeks to create work that is direct, accessible, and socially engaged.
Their work has been exhibited at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Fans Only Gallery and Sugar Cube Gallery. They are currently pursuing a BFA in Art Practice with a minor in Graphic Design at Portland State University.

Come help us make a bunch of weird, beautiful, meaningful stuff that’s going to get run over by a steamroller this fall.

(We’re serious.)

We’re kicking off a collaborative art-making event to create drawings, textures, and layered materials that will become part of a giant steamroller print event in our new building. Your marks = part of the final prints.

No pressure, no experience needed. Just show up.

Not a “maker”? Perfect. Bring scraps, photos, printed things, notes, ephemera...anything you’re into, and we’ll fold it into the mix.

What’s happening:
• Drawing
• Collaging
• Experimenting
• Hanging out
• Snacks + good energy

What happens to the work:
Everything made will be transformed into large-scale carved prints and printed using a literal steamroller (more on that later )

Details:
5:30–7:30
Shattuck Annex
Free + open to all (bring a friend!)

Let’s say goodbye to the old building by making something big, messy, and unforgettable together.

HELLO DIGITAL WORLD! so glad you could join us on this
Odyssey of You
36” × 36” Oil on canvas
Belligerent and dysfunctional families sometimes produce tricky individuals. Such people at times ignore how they truly feel and say all the supposed correct things to all conversations and prompts in life - of the like;
...What do you want to be when you grow up?
....What do you do outside of work?
.... What do you like to think about?
... Are you okay?
....Do you love me?
Did you feel the anxious rush before you had to answer? Say what the script tells you to get you out of discomfort.
Said individuals will grow up and not know what it is they feel inside, every day-
Emotional Alexithymia.
all these people have an “out” - you could look at them in their eyes and get a hint at what they really feel
they can laugh with you and hate you, and hate the world - not knowing this is their own fault, living the life they don’t want to exist in.
A remedy to this is to begin the odyssey we all should take within the self.

we wanted to share more about the artist’s process. here’s what Jovan had to say:
Q: Any thoughts/feelings/hopes for this piece from the audience?
A: to find more confidence and courage in yourself to live life how you want, by remembering how you feel when you ignore your real answer from your gut

Q: Is this a series of work?
A: Not yet, but I could find myself doing more of this, as I am still managing a few other projects I might later on, as for me this has a lot of personal weight.

Q: Hardest parts of the process?
A: Hardest ; time management and allowing myself enough time to flesh it out more, I didn’t have a lot of time for this so I had to cram a lot of it within a day or two.

Q: Softest parts of the process?
A: Finding the forms through a large brush and allowing mistakes to happen, finding the solution through the chaos allows me to utilize whats available to make the best choice when I have no ideas.

this piece will be on display now through April 19th. stop by and see it person for yourself!

thanks for your patience while we upload the photo documentation. in the meantime, we are pleased to introduce y’all to our current exhibiting artist, Javon La Grotta.

Jovan La Grotta is a Portland-based oil painter whose practice explores the self and the inner workings of the mind. Working primarily with oil on canvas, they use portraiture to investigate memory, emotion, and the layered nature of thought.
Their work considers how the body and mind process experience—how memory can be felt before it is fully understood, and how emotional responses often precede conscious awareness. Through fragmented and expressive portraits, La Grotta creates images that reflect shifting psychological states and internal landscapes.
Influenced by personal experience, music, and everyday observation, their paintings emphasize mood, texture, and subtle tonal variation. The material qualities of oil paint play a central role in their process, allowing forms to emerge and dissolve over time.
Their work has been exhibited at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and Fans Only Gallery. La Grotta is currently pursuing a BFA in Art Practice at Portland State University, with an expected graduation in Fall 2026.
