Blinded by the light 💡 ⚛! Eberly College of Science Chemistry doctoral candidate Shreya Mathela uses powerful green lasers to study ultra‑thin semiconductor materials once thought too fragile for real‑world technology. Here she is working with the Materials Research Institute.

Her tools are so fast they can track energy moving through atoms in trillionths of a second. This reveals how tiny defects form and when they hurt (or help) performance. Using these insights, Shreya developed new “design rules” that guide how stronger, more reliable materials are made. Big impact at a small scale!

Stewart Mallory, assistant professor of chemistry and chemical engineering, is working on solving the problem of single file dynamics — the idea of moving in single file and trying to determine how long it’s going to take to get where you want to go.

This year NCS was able to take 28 students to the 2025 Spring ACS conference, with 21 poster presenters and 2 talk presenters.

Our last presenter Phuong Ho presented her research on the photophysical properties of ethidium bromide and its application in determining water dynamics in hydrated Nafion® film at the division of physical chemistry poster session. Great job Phuong!

#acsspring2025 day one presenters!

Five of our members presented posters at two symposiums today. Simeon Teklu, Aaron Tsai, and Aidan Gonzalez presented at the 2025 F. Albert Cotton Award in Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry, a symposium in honor of Penn State’s very own Dr. Raymond Schaak. River Diamond and Sarah Elliot also presented their work at the nanoscience session.

#acsspring2025 – Day Two!

Yesterday was an exciting day as eleven of our members showcased their research!

At the Undergraduate Poster Session, Ashely Beers, David Friedenberg, Nikitha Kanumuru, Zhongxu Liang, Duncan McQueen, Jacob Orrico, Mia Petrucela, Molly Smock, Rachel Swank, and Jacob Wincko presented their work. Additionally, Sean Zsoldos delivered a talk at the Basic Research in Colloids, Surfactants & Interfaces symposium.

Our executive board members also represented our chapter by presenting our club poster at the SSC Poster Session.
