Some snippets of the lecture by the one and only designer of Alphabettes Soup, Tereza Bettinardi (@terezabettinardi) last week at @volumes.designlibrary in Portland.

Talking about the process of designing this 400+ page book using 100+ typefaces, and publishing as a form of shared enthusiasm.

Thank you to all those who joined and took home a copy of the book!

In a way, this trip to Portland began years ago — more precisely on March 7, 2019. That was the day I received a copy of Graphic Means in the mail. Never tired to say this documentary had the effect of a big bang in my head: finally, someone had managed to connect technology, design history, and feminism. It showed how layouts are not simply the result of our own will, it shows how technology itself has shaped those decisions. This became a turning point for me in understanding how I design. So many other things unfolded from that moment, eventually leading to the interview book with @briarlevit that we published through @clubedolivrodesign, as well as her visit to São Paulo for @diatiposp.

Last night was especially meaningful because it was the first presentation I did about a project to which I dedicated an enormous amount of energy: Alphabettes Soup, edited by @amypapaelias and published by @bikini.books. I could never have imagined that one day I would be working on a book with this kind of reach, this network of people, and this level of importance within the fields of design and typography.

I’m happy to share this story here in Portland. I truly have no words to thank everyone for all the warmth and care I’ve received here. It has been incredibly special. Thanks @psugd @psugdkemeny @volumes.designlibrary @builtbycivilization for the invitation 💜❤️‍🔥✨
