Ever finish a busy day feeling like you've done everything and nothing at the same time?

Answering messages while studying. Switching between tasks. Trying to keep five things in your head at once.

When tasks compete for your attention, frequent switching can make it harder to concentrate and may increase mental effort.

You don't need a perfect productivity system to experiment with a simpler approach.

🧠 Choose one priority.
📵 Reduce one avoidable distraction.
⏳ Work on one manageable step before switching, when your situation allows.

Of course, some roles require monitoring several things at once. The goal isn't to eliminate multitasking completely—it's to be more intentional about where your attention goes.

What's the biggest distraction when you're trying to focus?

I'm a psychiatry resident, and no, I still can't read minds. 😂🧠

Somewhere between textbooks, ward rounds, exams, and trying to remember everything I've learned, psychiatry keeps teaching me something important: understanding people takes more than knowing diagnoses.

It takes listening without rushing to conclusions. Recognising that not every difficult day is a disorder. Remembering that psychiatrists are human, too.

And perhaps most importantly, seeing the person beyond the diagnosis.

I'm still learning. Still asking questions. Still discovering how much there is to understand about the human mind.

Because being in psychiatry doesn't mean having all the answers. It means staying curious enough to keep looking.

For the medical students, residents, mental-health professionals, and curious minds here—which slide resonated with you the most ?

You picked up your phone to check one notification. Now it's 40 minutes later. 📱👀

Sound familiar?

Our phones help us connect, learn, work, and unwind. But sometimes, scrolling takes up more of our attention than we intended.

A digital pause isn't about giving up technology. It's about using it more intentionally.

🌿 Step away from your screen for a few minutes.
🚶 Take a short walk or stretch.
☕ Have a conversation without checking your notifications.
📵 Try keeping your phone aside during meals or before bedtime.

You don't need a dramatic digital detox. Start with one small break and see how it feels.

Be honest: have you ever opened your phone for one thing and forgotten what you came to do? 😂

Mental health is shaped by multiple dimensions — from how we use substances and experience changes in the brain, to the enduring patterns through which we understand ourselves and relate to others.

Substance-Related & Addictive Disorders
Involve problematic patterns of substance use or addictive behaviours that can lead to significant distress, impairment, and changes in functioning.

Neurocognitive Disorders
Involve acquired changes in cognitive functioning, such as memory, attention, language, executive functioning, or perception, that may affect everyday independence and quality of life.

Personality Disorders
Involve enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differ significantly from cultural expectations and may lead to difficulties in relationships, self-image, and daily functioning.

Understanding Mental Health Beyond the Surface.....

Mental health can influence our relationships, identity, emotions, behavior, and the way we respond to the world around us.

Sexual Dysfunctions
Involve clinically significant disturbances in sexual response or the experience of sexual pleasure, desire, arousal, or orgasm, causing distress or interpersonal difficulties.

Gender Dysphoria
Refers to clinically significant distress or impairment associated with the incongruence between an individual’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender. It is important to remember that gender diversity itself is not a mental disorder.

Disruptive, Impulse-Control & Conduct Disorders
Include difficulties with emotional and behavioral self-control, often involving problems with anger, aggression, rule-breaking, or violation of the rights of others.

Together, these categories highlight the importance of understanding the person behind the behavior, experience, or distress — without judgment or stigma.

When Everyday Functions Become a Source of Distress

The DSM-5-TR recognizes several disorders that affect essential functions of everyday life — from our relationship with food and eating, to elimination, and sleep.

Feeding & Eating Disorders
Involve persistent disturbances in eating or eating-related behavior that can significantly affect physical health and psychological well-being.

Elimination Disorders
Involve inappropriate elimination of urine or feces beyond the developmental age at which such behavior is expected, causing distress or impairment.

Sleep-Wake Disorders
Involve difficulties with the quality, timing, or amount of sleep and can significantly impact daytime functioning, mood, and overall well-being.

These disorders remind us that behaviours we often consider “ordinary” can sometimes reflect deeper psychological, developmental, or physiological concerns.

🧠 When the Mind Speaks in Different Ways

Psychological distress doesn’t always look the same. Sometimes, it is experienced through the body, sometimes through memory and identity, and sometimes through the lasting impact of trauma and stress.

🌿 Somatic & Related Disorders explore the connection between psychological distress and physical symptoms.

🪞 Dissociative Disorders involve disruptions in memory, identity, consciousness, or the sense of self.

🌧️ Trauma- & Stressor-Related Disorders reflect the psychological impact that overwhelming or stressful experiences can have on thoughts, emotions, behavior, and everyday life.

Together, these disorders remind us that the mind and body are deeply interconnected — and that every symptom deserves understanding rather than judgment.

✨ Look beyond the symptom. Listen to the experience. Lead with empathy.

A carer needs care! ♥️🤝🏻

Caregivers of seniors are the backbone of their care, yet their own mental and physical well-being is often overlooked—making them the “unacknowledged patients” of our society.

At GERON2026, we emphasize that supporting the caregiver is essential to supporting the patient. By leveraging digital assessments for caregiver burden, we can objectively track stress levels, identify early risk factors, and deliver timely, personalized interventions.

🧠 DSM-5-TR Mental Health Disorder Series | Understanding What We Often Misunderstand

Mental health disorders can affect the way we think, feel, behave, relate to others, and experience everyday life — but understanding them is the first step toward compassion and appropriate support. 🌿

From the overwhelming worry and fear experienced in Anxiety Disorders, to intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours in Obsessive-Compulsive & Related Disorders, and the persistent sadness, loss of interest, and emotional changes associated with Depressive Disorders — these are more than simply “overthinking,” “being particular,” or “having a bad day.”

✨ Anxiety Disorders can involve excessive fear, worry, physical symptoms, avoidance, and a persistent sense of threat.

✨ Obsessive-Compulsive & Related Disorders may involve intrusive, unwanted thoughts, repetitive behaviours, preoccupations, or urges that cause significant distress and interfere with daily functioning.

✨ Depressive Disorders can affect mood, motivation, sleep, appetite, concentration, energy, self-worth, and the ability to experience pleasure.

Every individual experiences mental health difficulties differently. There is no single face, story, or experience of a mental health disorder.

🌱 Awareness reduces stigma.
Understanding builds empathy.
Early support can make a difference.

If symptoms are persistent, distressing, or interfering with everyday life, reaching out to a qualified mental health professional is an important step.

You are not alone. Support is here. 🤍

Mental health is complex, diverse, and deeply connected to the way we think, feel, perceive, remember, and experience the world. 🧠✨

From Neurocognitive Disorders that affect memory, attention, and other cognitive abilities, to Schizophrenia Spectrum & Other Psychotic Disorders that can alter perception, thought, and reality, and Bipolar & Related Disorders that involve significant shifts in mood, energy, and activity — each deserves understanding, compassion, and evidence-based care.

Understanding these disorders is the first step toward reducing stigma and recognizing when someone may need support. 🤍

🌿Awareness • Understanding • Empathy • Care

At Aaranya, we believe mental health education should make complex concepts easier to understand — while reminding us that behind every diagnosis is a person, their story, and their journey.

Save this post for a quick reference and share it to spread mental health awareness. 💜
