Giving up is hard, and it is harder still to rebuild. Turning ruble into art takes a certain kind of moxie.

Just the way you didn’t think you could do it, no one else thinks you can either. In this societal model we all have our place.

If you have the support you need, consider yourself lucky. If you don’t, then you are still not alone.

Learn about your body so you can learn to feel safe in it.

Maybe you felt safe your whole life and then something happened where you had to relearn safety after trauma.

Maybe you’ve never felt safe in your body.

Maybe your life goes through waves of experiences where safety feels more common than other times or it varies situationally.

Whatever your story, learning about your body, how it functions, what feels good, what feels safe, what feels desired…

This is how life is meant to be lived: with awareness and embodiment.

The nervous system is fascinating. Swipe through to learn more.

My current favorite theory to explore with clients is this:

The polyvagal theory proposes that the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system provides the neurophysiological substrates for adaptive behavioral strategies. It further proposes that physiological state limits the range of behavior and psychological experience.

🧠Adults who have experienced trauma at an early age are prone to experiencing dysregulation of the nervous system, especially when stressed. Dysregulation is known to be linked to depression, addiction, anxiety and emotional outbursts.⁣⁣
⁣
🙌🏼The good news is that we can help to regulate our nervous system. The trick is to do a little often. When you decide you will do yoga for an hour a day, five days a week, when you haven’t been doing yoga at all for a year, you set yourself up to fail. It is much better to commit to doing 5 or 10 minutes of practice daily and keep that promise to yourself than going hard and then giving up.⁣

🧡It is difficult for healing to occur when we are in hypo or hyper arousal. We need to be within our ‘window of tolerance’ where the prefrontal cortex is switched on, and our cognition is online.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🛠Different self-regulation tools can help you to stay within your personal window of tolerance. The body has a natural pull towards homeostasis and will want to pull us back into the window of tolerance and out of this numbness. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
☝🏽One way we do this is to do things that make us feel alive. These could be dangerous activities, so it is important to learn healthy ways to ‘wake us up’ and bring us out of hypoarousal and back into our personal window of tolerance.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🪟The goal of therapy is to expand the window of tolerance without becoming dysregulated and going into hypo or hyperarousal.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When we are learning to self-regulate, it is about finding what works for YOU. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When you are hypoaroused (shut down), what gets you moving? ⁣⁣

😌As we move through life, most of the time, we are within a safe range of arousal, which means a state where we can function well as human beings. We can self-regulate, feel grounded and present, and the reasoning part of our brain is switched on.⁣
⁣
⏰As we face challenges throughout the day, we naturally move into more or less arousal, which could feel like anxiety, depending on what is happening around us. This is normal, as anxiety is a messenger to let us know there could be a threat. You can think of it as your inner alarm system. When there is danger, the alarm goes off. ⁣
⁣

⁣
Do you recognise any of the hyperarousal signs within yourself? ⁣
