We byke! Today we’re talking about black hair in video games. Looking at where we’ve been, and highlighting some people working to get us further.

Anyone that’s tried to make a black character in a character creation screen knows the struggle of trying to find decent black hair in games. Crunchy straight backs, phantom hairlines, and, quite literally, as depicted in the Sims 4 concept art above, fros modeled after cauliflower— until recently has been the reality. Going back to our last post, sports games like the NBA 2K series have, for some time now, offered accurate representations of many different black hair types, but these were generally limited to men.

Black hair, and as a result, people wishing to see and create characters with it, has often felt like an afterthought. In a medium where systems are constantly becoming more robust and complex, even games released in 2022 have failed to provide the same level of meticulous craft to textured hair as the rest of their game worlds. Programmers have been challenging the limitations of the tools they used since the medium’s first inception, so why have things been so different here?

The Open Source Afro Hair Library is working towards a solution for this problem. @prettydarke , artist and UC Santa Cruz professor behind the project, says the following in an interview with Vice: “With every problem, chances are there’s already some Black people who are thinking about this, who are working on this, know how to do it, and just we have not asked them,” Darke said. “My thoughts were, ‘We know how to do this, but may not have the time, the material and communal support to author on our own visions.’” Through grants Darke has brought in six artists to create nine hairstyles each for their own original open source characters. This will allow developers access to lovingly crafted digital renders of black folks, reinforcing the fact that we’re worth so much more than a few slots at the bottom of the character creation page. The project aims to launch Juneteenth 2023.

Everyday, black women & creators are challenging the status quo of the digital world. This week we are inspired by the story of 3D designers creating authentic black hairstyles in video games, under an Afro hair library project by @prettydarke.
