**Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award Exhibition | Artist Q&A**

We had an enriching morning with a public Q&A alongside fellow Taranaki Māori artists Luanna Sheridan and Nia Tipene at Puke Ariki Museum.

Along with Meka Mauriri, we were each commissioned to create a taonga reflecting our tūpuna, in keeping with the kaupapa of the touring exhibition. During the Q&A, we shared insights into our creative choices and the deeper meaning held within each of our works.

Meka was represented through his stunning carved hoe paddle, which reflects his ancestral lines. He was unable to attend due to a tangi, so Puke Ariki curator Natasha McKinney spoke about his work on his behalf.

Whanaunga Kahurangi Bailey, who was Cultural Experiences Pou Tikanga for this exhibition, was also there with her husband Albie Tipene and youngest daughter Te Waiora supporting their eldest daughter Nia, whose truly stunning painting reflected upon different facets of her beloved Kuia Whero 'Poppy' Bailey. It was wonderful to see our emerging artists shining so brightly.

Luanna's creation is fascinatingly breathtaking - you need to see it and experience it - made out of hue inside hue inside hue...atua wahine, Hine Pū te Hue.

Also with us with Jodi Tipa - ring toi for the tuku Open Studio. She was one of three ringa toi who made adorned steel Manaia Guardian Figures in each of the corners of the exhibition under the guidance of senior artist-designer Wharehoka Smith.

Mum, Raewynne Niwa, was in the Gold Coast for the exhibition opening a few weeks ago, so this was her first time seeing the finished artwork I created of my pāpā, Hone John Niwa, with our beautiful 18-year-old Coco, who passed just before the exhibition.

I’m incredibly grateful that this commission and its deadline gave me the opportunity to create this portrait- celebrating Dad, his whakapapa and this chapter of his life as he approaches the big 80.

Dad is already in celebration mode, touring South Africa with a mate for the All Blacks vs Springbok! 🖤

My mahi is inspired by Māori heritage and my connection to the whenua and moana. I create colorful vibrant & bold contemporary pieces that combine Māori patterns with my own style, expressing stories of strength, protection and guardianship.

Taranaki … through the eyes of a local diver 🐟

It’s a wild, wonderful west coast, and for so many years I grew up wondering what lay offshore and under that beautiful blue horizon. Once I got my dive cert, I began a lifelong journey of discovery… learning that this coastline is home to one heck of a colourful, healthy and biodiverse wonderland… here’s a few of my fav ‘characters’ I captured hanging out at the reefs this past season! 🌈

We were delighted to have hosted a short-term international programme of students from Otsuma Nakano Junior & Senior High School, Tokyo, who spent time immersed in Kiwi culture, learning, and everyday English while staying with Green School New Zealand host families.

For many of these students, it was their first time travelling overseas and their first opportunity to use English in real-life situations. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they embraced every new experience.

During their stay, students enjoyed a wide range of activities, including @puke_ariki museum visits, poi making and poi lessons, a sustainable sewing class with Sam from @stitch.up.society, gymnastics sessions, and plenty of fun at a local bounce park! They also explored local landmarks, including the Wind Wand and Lake Mangamahoe.

The students were fully involved in school life, joining Green School learners in everything from Biology and Literacy to Yoga classes.

🌿 A major highlight was experiencing a day in the life of a Green School student through our Nature Day Programme, as well as taking part in Kapa Haka, Assembly, and our buddy programme, where each visitor was matched with a Green School student.

We are incredibly proud of how brave, enthusiastic, and adaptable these young people were during their time with us. Many stepped well outside their comfort zones, forming new friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

A huge thank you to our Green School families and wider community for hosting!

Nau mai, haere mai! We hope the friendships, experiences, and learning gained during this special exchange will stay with them for years to come. 💚

I’m officially a fossil 👉 The museum don’t know how to label me (me neither) 🫣 Thanks for the time travel @puke_ariki and @taranakidailynews 😉 Me and my brother Mark had this taken as a gift for Mum back in the day. I would say I’d done my hair special but that was tame 👨‍🎤#1990s #hair #fossils #oldphotos

We're proud to support the Kīngi Tūheitia Portraiture Award, a kaupapa that creates opportunities for emerging Māori artists.

The opening at @puke_ariki brought together Te Kīngitanga, artists, whānau and the community to celebrate a touring exhibition that champions emerging Māori artists and honours the stories of their tūpuna.

These images are from the opening at Puke Ariki, where Te Kīngitanga, artists, whānau and the community came together to welcome the exhibition to Taranaki.
