⚽️ ACL REHAB DOESN’T END WHEN YOU’RE CLEARED TO PLAY ⚽️

Getting back on the field is a milestone—not the finish line.

This athlete successfully returned to soccer, competed in spring matches, and is now home for the summer. Instead of checking the box and moving on, she’s investing in what comes next:

✅ Building more strength
✅ Improving deceleration control
✅ Enhancing trunk stability
✅ Developing force absorption strategies
✅ Creating balance from the feet
➡️ lower extremities ➡️ core
Everything starts with objective testing:
📊 Strength testing
📊 Functional movement assessment
📊 Force plate analysis

The goal isn’t just returning to sport.
The goal is returning BETTER, stronger, and more resilient while reducing future injury risk.
Too many athletes stop rehab when they get cleared. The best athletes continue training long after they return to competition.

Return to sport is a moment.

Performance development is a process.
👇 Are you still training after being cleared to play?

Shoulder rehab isn’t just about getting stronger… it’s about building stability, control, and the ability to react under load. 💥

This seated feet-elevated military press with hanging kettlebells is a great advanced progression for shoulder + core stability training. Even though this isn’t a perfect example by me, it highlights the concepts we want in higher-level rehab and performance training.

🔹 Elevating the feet increases the demand on the core for trunk control and positioning
🔹 The hanging kettlebells create constant perturbations and reactionary movement challenges
🔹 Huge emphasis on rotator cuff activation and scapular stability
🔹 Forces the body to connect upper body strength with core control and postural stability

These advanced stability drills help prepare athletes and active individuals for the unpredictable demands of sport, training, and life. This is NOT where we start in rehab — it’s something we progressively build toward once foundational strength, mobility, and motor control are established.

Control > chaos. Earn the right to progress. 👊

Late phase rehab should look less like “exercise” and more like sport. ⚽️🏀

🪞Reactive mirror drills are a great way to bridge that gap.

Using two athletes recovering from similar timelines after surgery, we’re training:
• Reactive agility
• Change of direction mechanics
• Deceleration control
• Single-leg stability
• Reactive hopping & jumping power
• Visual processing + movement response
One athlete leads. One athlete reacts.
Shuffle. Hop. Jump. Forward ↔ backward.
Continuous adjustments based off visual cues just like sport demands.

In some drills we add the PJB long super bands to create an extra pull/tug that challenges:
✔️ Neuromuscular control
✔️ Body awareness
✔️ Trunk and hip stability
✔️ Force absorption during deceleration
The goal isn’t just producing force… it’s controlling it under unpredictable conditions. An added bonus?

It creates competition, connection, and community during rehab — something that often gets overlooked in the later phases of recovery.

No second athlete? No problem.
This can be done with a therapist, coach, assistant, teammate, or parent and still becomes an incredibly interactive way to train sport-specific reactivity.

The closer rehab gets to the chaos of sport, the more prepared the athlete becomes for return to play. 💥

One test doesn’t diagnose an ACL tear… a cluster does.”

In the clinic we don’t rely on one special test to predict an ACL injury.
We look for a cluster of clinical findings that improve diagnostic confidence.

Each test brings something different to the table — some are more sensitive, others are more specific, and together they help us build a clearer picture.

In this carousel we’re looking at:
• Lachman Test – one of the most sensitive tests for ACL injury
• Anterior Drawer Test – assesses anterior tibial translation
• Lever Sign Test – a newer test with promising diagnostic value
• Valgus Stress Test – helps evaluate MCL integrity and potential multi-ligament involvement

No single test is perfect.
But when multiple tests point in the same direction, the probability of ACL injury increases significantly.

Clinical diagnosis is about patterns, not single data points.

Stay tuned for the pivot shift test, which adds another powerful piece to the puzzle.

Message to Young Clinicians

This is a reminder that you will encounter people in your career that will try to tear you down and not lift you up.

They have many reasons which typically go back to their own unhappiness and insecurities, but it is really important that you put a support network around you , have a strong faith, and believe in yourself.

I had two people earlier in my career before as a licensed physical therapist that tried to tear me down

“ Everyone wants to work in sports medicine and thinks they’ll run a sports medicine clinic. What makes YOU so special.”

“You should go back to school. Study something else, physical therapy is not going be something you’re good at.”

No hate, I appreciate their feedback. I’m sure they felt that way.

Motivation can come in lots of areas, but ultimately you have to be strong enough to take negative feedback and be something that fuels you.

I obviously didn’t forget. I just want all of you to recognize that you’ll have people try to break you down and it is your choice whether you keep pushing towards your goals or let the words of others change your path.

Let them be the fire that burns inside of you and not the fire that burns you down.
