In the town of Hindeloopen in the province of Friesland, I noticed a large teapot, cup, and saucer filled with birdseed placed beside the entrance of almost every house. I had never seen such a creative idea in any other town in the Netherlands. It made the town even more beautiful, while also providing food for the birds. Hindeloopen was full of sparrows, moving around in little flocks.

A few months ago, @axelyouri and I had the pleasure of filming @onno_theelen in his workshop, and creating this artist portrait on 8mm film for his exhibition at @purmerendsmuseum, curated by @jfkugel.

The exhibition runs for one more month, so if you’re in the area, go check it out! 🐊

The Historic Mart Stam Bench in Purmerend

The Dr. J.J. Maats Bench in Purmerend, the Netherlands, was designed and built in 1926 by the renowned Dutch architect Mart Stam. The bench was created as a memorial to Dr. J.J. Maats, a respected and popular physician in the city.

The design reflects the principles of modern architecture, with a strong emphasis on geometric forms and horizontal and vertical lines. According to the University of Amsterdam’s catalogue of Mart Stam’s work, the design was influenced by Piet Mondrian and Neoplasticism, linking the bench to the artistic ideas associated with De Stijl.

The original concrete structure was destroyed in 1967. In 2010, the work was reconstructed by Dutch artist Hans van Houwelingen, based on Stam’s original design, and was reinstalled in Purmerend.
Today, the bench is more than a public seating place: it is a small but significant piece of Purmerend’s architectural and cultural heritage, as well as an example of Mart Stam’s early contribution to Dutch modernism.

Dr. J. J. Maats was a Dutch general practitioner (family doctor) in Purmerend, the Netherlands.

He worked as a doctor in Purmerend for about 50 years.

He treated poor patients free of charge and helped people who could not afford medical care.

He sometimes visited patients in the surrounding area by horse-drawn carriage.
He died in 1922.

His patients wanted to honor him, and a memorial bench called the Dr. Maatsbank was built in 1926.

He is still remembered in Purmerend for his long service to the local community and his help to poor patients.

⭕️ Learning about the history of the city of Purmerend with professional tour guides is my best opportunity in the museum.
