having fun with light and shadows on a little photo walk around a small town! god it’s so nice to shoot when the sun is out lol. i’ve been really sad about my olympus stylus breaking but it’s made me take out my pentax k1000 more which i’ve learned to appreciate. listen i don’t claim to know very much about photography and technical settings but i do very much acknowledge that i’ve put in work to get better results and it seems to be happening. at the very least, my photography feels a lot more intentional again and that’s always a good feeling. i appreciate the control i have with the slr cause it puts a lot of responsibility on me to make it right. i guess the point and shoot kinda felt like cheating sometimes. so i’m glad i’m strengthening my old skills again. i’m also not getting too caught up in not having the hottest gear (though i am still on the market for a new camera), which is nice. i’m doing this shit cause i like it and cause it feels important to me. which is good. this is good.

tldr: teaching for @youthcanseattle at the @winglukemuseum has been a truly life giving, heart expanding experience.
every friday i come to this classroom and “teach art” to a group of high schoolers. they are silly and talented and thoughtful and ridiculous. big goobers. we come in every friday feeling exhausted and stressed and we leave feeling just a lil better. i put teach art in quotes cause lots of the time i think all i’m really doing is building a space where they can explore who they are. we do check-ins. talk about the good and the hard. we laugh. complain about school. yeah we do poems and take photos but at the end of the day we’re building community. we’re finding out how we want to show up and be. just be.
it’s such a joy to be doing this, especially right now. senior year woes are leaving me feeling lost and restless and searching for meaning beyond the structures that are changing soon. i don’t feel like i’m particularly significant anywhere, but here i do. for three hours every friday, i feel like i’m doing something valuable. sustaining a place like this. in this special museum in this special program in this special neighborhood with these special humans. every friday i feel like...i matter.
context for the video:
a few weeks ago i came home to an envelope from san diego with a bunch of stickers that i didn’t order. i had a feeling that @purshoot / @wes_sleep had something to do with it so i texted him, to find out that this mf sent a bunch of cool stickers made by another san diego artist @koysun to me to give to my students. it reminded me that art...exists in communities. for communities. by communities. it’s not an isolated practice and it never should be.
god, i just really love this job and i’m sad for it to be ending soon. it has been abundant and magical and everything my heart has needed in this year of healing.
