Milwaukee has far to go when it comes to culinary representation from the diverse set of countries so often unfairly homogenized by terms like “Middle Eastern” or “Mediterranean.” Fortunately, recent years have brought an increasing buffet of regional specialties from countries including Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Iran; and I have high hopes that more will follow.

In the meantime, here are six spots that offer a delicious peek at the regionally distinctive cuisines often disguised by the use of more generic nomenclature.

RGI had an opportunity to meet Chef Kori and to visit her farm, Purslane Commons @purslanemke. What a beautiful day to be in the country! She welcomed us to harvest some carrots, Japanese greens, tat soi, bok choi, beans, and daikon. We plan to make kimchi and Lao som pok with this bounty. Chef Kori and Chef John collaborated on making a delicious lunch using ingredients from both farms. Thank you Chef Kori for having us! We can not wait to visit again!

2026 birthday in Milwaukee
One month later…

I listed some of my favorite restaurants in Milwaukee and enjoy them with friends and family!

Food x friends are the way I celebrate my birthday in the last many, many years lol

Here are my to-go places, it is not in order of preference because each one has a special occasion but it’s all with great food or drinks but in parentheses is my favorite food. There are some more places I like around just follow me to check my favorite spots.

1. Avli @avli (kataifi shrimp)
2. Lupi and Iris @lupiandirismke (go with the Bistecca if you feel hungry….they do have the best fries and wine dinners)
3. Purslane @purslanemke (drinks and walleye falafel)
4. Nakama @nakama.mke (the Omakase but if you can’t get a seat at the countertop, seating at the table with hand roll service is fantastic and the black sesame ice cream is a must-try even after all the hand rolls)
5. Cassis @cassismke (open for lunch, the walleye sandwich is the best option for lunch)
6. Agency @agency.mke (we do drink sometimes too, the dealers’ choice is something you won’t regret!)
7. Sinta @sinta.mke (their special pop-ups or some bite at Agency)
8. Nourish @nourishlakecountry (avocado toast and the cold-pressed juices)
