Women belong in sport. And we belong in every role within it 🏃‍♀️🩺

Anyone can work in sport.

Athletes. Physios. Sports therapists. Doctors. Coaches. Scientists. Analysts. Team managers. Performance staff. The list goes on.

Women working in sport have worked just as hard and sometimes even harder to earn their place.

The early mornings.
The late nights.
The weekends away.
The constant learning.
The pressure.
The years of education and experience.
The sacrifices made to build a career in an industry we love.

Being a woman in a male-dominated sporting environment doesn’t make you a novelty. It doesn’t make you a decoration. And it certainly doesn’t mean you haven’t earned your place.

We are here because we are qualified. Because we are capable. Because we are passionate. Because we belong.

Let’s continue to create a sporting culture where women are recognised for their knowledge, skill, strength, resilience and contribution.

And to every woman trying to make her way in sport:

Keep showing up. Keep taking up space. Keep breaking barriers.

You belong here ❤️

🏉Rugby Injury Meeting with the Head Coach after the Weekends Game POV:

The Rugby coach’s medical degree is from the 1990’s Rugby changing room 😅🫣

Lad can’t turn his neck, limping off one leg, shoulder hanging by a thread — but apparently he’s “sweet for training” because “back in my day we just got on with it.”

Meanwhile Rugby medical staff are apparently just there to dish out painkillers, slap on some tape, and admire the damage.

Proper tough job sometimes, but you’ve got to stand strong because the game’s changed since gaffer was surviving on Deep Heat and bad decisions 😂

The game is faster ….

The game has bigger and more collisions due to player speed …..

There is no where to hide in the modern game with cameras and GPS and statistics being monitored

The game that 20 Year Olds are playing now is significantly harder than what a 45 -50 year old coach now would have played due to modern rugby strength and conditioning.

Tag a Rugby Coach or Rugby Medic that has been here 😂🫣😅

Cheers

🚨New 🏉Rugby Injury Research Alert ‼️

Open access on BMJ Open Sports + Exercise Medicine ( search title below on Google scholar and follow link )

Epidemiology of rugby injuries: a systematic review and meta- analysis

Juho Laaksonen Ilari Kuitunen4,5 ABSTRACT: ,1,2 Matias Vaajala,1 Oskari Pakarinen,3 Rasmus Liukkonen,1

CONCLUSION :

‘Injury rates in rugby are high compared with other collision sports, with injuries more frequently occurring during matches than training sessions.

Among the different formats, Rugby Sevens had the highest overall injury rate.

Injuries to the lower limbs were the most commonly reported, and sprains were the most frequent injury type across all formats.

Although awareness of player safety is increasing, more research is needed, especially in Rugby League and Rugby Sevens, where available data are limited and definitions of injury vary across reports.

Expanding research in these areas will help improve understanding of injury risks and support the development of more effective strategies for prevention and safety in rugby’

Great work by the authors 👏👏👏

Rugby Injuries : Dead Legs /Contusion/ Haematoma

One common injury is the “Dead Leg,” medically referred to as a quadriceps haematoma or contusion. This injury occurs due to a direct impact to the thigh, leading to bleeding within the muscle tissue. Understanding the nuances of this injury is crucial for effective treatment and recovery

A key aspect of managing a quadriceps haematoma is distinguishing between an intermuscular haematoma and an intramuscular haematoma. An intermuscular haematoma involves bleeding between the muscles, often resulting in quicker recovery as the blood can disperse more easily. In contrast, an intramuscular haematoma involves bleeding within the muscle itself, leading to increased pressure and a longer recovery period due to the confined space.

Typically, there will be a history of a Direct impact to the Limb / Quadriceps on the outside of the Leg , that is remembered during a Rugby Match or Rugby Training Session

Severity is linked with whether they can continue to play on in the Rugby Game or have to come off

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Pain/ Inflammation
Loss of Motion
Lump/Bruising
Decreased Power on Quad Contraction
Unable to Stretch Quad or Deep squat due to restriction
Limping
Unable to Run or Step off affected Limb, Unable to Jump/ Hop Etc.
This is predominately a Clinical Diagnosis and only in severe cases are X-ray’s and Further Imaging eg Ultrasound Or MRI if there are complications.

See my Blog on my website for treatment details ….. in short ice quad in a flexed position so it doesn’t heal in a quad shortened position 👍

International Rugby Referee Gives Rugby Physio :

‘All the Time You Need’

To make a good accurate assessment / diagnosis / treatment and wise decision on whether to Remove from Play or Continue Playing after Rugby Player gets Injured during an International Televised Sporting Event 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I loved this yesterday at the @welshrugbyunion vs @japanrugby_jrfu game at the @principalitysta in Wales during the @nationsseries

This needs to happen across the Globe at all levels, at all sports , especially at Grassroots/ amateur level where sometimes there is minimal medical expertise or very inexperienced/ young new graduate medical staff.

This should be championed and an example to all involved in Sports at all levels - it is not just the newly graduated therapist/ volunteers responsibility but the responsibility of the organisation and match officials as a whole 🤝🔥

Well done to Matthew Carley👏👏👏
