Andy Warhol with Catherine Guinness, Kathy Hilton, Rick Hilton, Kyle Richards, Kathy Richards, Kim Richards, and Asha Puthli during a party in New York City, April 1980. Andy moved effortlessly between the worlds of art, celebrity, and high society. At the time, Rick Hilton, grandson of Hilton Hotels founder Conrad Hilton, was a real estate investment banker, while his wife Kathy Hilton and her sisters Kim and Kyle Richards were already familiar faces as child actors in Hollywood. Decades later they'd find a new audience on the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Catherine Guinness, a member of the prominent Guinness family, was one of Andy's close friends and worked for Interview. As noted in the book "Warhol" (1997) by Victor Bockris: "The English aristocrats whom Fred imported had a definite influence on the atmosphere of the Factory in the second half of the seventies and none more than the Irish-Norwegian offspring of the Mitford family, Catherine Guinness, who personified the upper-class English girl. She was beautiful but not in an artificial or threatening way. She could be so scornful with one or two words of disdain that one wanted to evaporate, but more often than not she could be, by example, an encouragement to live. For a while she was certainly Andy's best girl and her sense of humour and fresh view of everything in New York that was new to her kept him fresh too. Catherine played a big role in the development of Interview magazine's style. She had just the right balance of haughtiness to impress Americans, refusing for example to be kept waiting on the phone and just hanging up, which people tended to be charmed by because she was English. Hence she was able to pull in a good deal of advertising. She was also the perfect foil to accompany Andy on interview assignments when Bob was busy doing something else. From 1976 to 1979 she was Andy's nightly date at every dinner, opening and show. 'Andy was incredibly generous, not only with money but with himself too,' she recalled. I never knew anybody else pay when we went out to dinner unless it was a client. He'd always take me and all my friends out to dinner.'" Andy Warhol with Asha Puthli, Chef Hansraj Kaportra, Sharon Hammond, Kevin Farley, Fred Hughes, and Bob Colacello at Raga in New York City, 1977. In the article "Great Gusts of Ghee" William Bayer and Paula Wolfert wrote for New York Magazine (October 24, 1977): "The Indians have arrived. The scent of their spices wafts through midtown streets-cardamom, cumin, clove, and mace. The aroma of tandoor ovens in-spires dreams of fire in the mouth. And all this has happened suddenly, a crescendo of turmeric, tamarind, pepper, and ghee.... There have always been Indian restaurants in this city, student places up seedy flights of stairs. But this new invasion is something else. Now the Indians have occupied some of the most expensive premises in town. Nirvana, Gaylord, Tandoor, Tabela, and Shezan. Within recent months we've seen three more openings: Raga, in Rockefeller Center; Akbar, on Park between 57th and 58th; and Mayoor, on West 56th. ... Raga calls itself 'New York's Finest Indian Restaurant.' Located on West 48th, where the Forum of the Twelve Caesars once stood, it is certainly the most lavish, the grandest, of the new entries, though whether it is great, or even fine, is a matter of considerable doubt. The decorations are princely: a fortune's worth of antique Indian musical instruments on the walls, a forest of wooden columns breaking up the cavernous space. Rug and fabrics are vivid. Sitar music pours from the walls. Clearly this is meant to be one of those magic-wonderland places in which we are going to be transported to another world." Photo by Pop Art Trio on April 11, 2026.
